Ten of the past 11 Heisman-winning quarterbacks were Elite 11 finalists

SC QB commit, Brandon McIlwain, is the Elite 11 Semi's MVP, so everyone will be gunning for his top spot in the finals, in Eugene.

That makes since about the Elite 11 Finalists, how many of those guys actually were the Finals of the Elite 11 MVP though?

Were Cam and Manziel? I could be wrong, but I don't think they were?

Are you sure? I'm looking at the wiki page for Elite 11 and, well, Mariota wasn't Elite 11, Manziel wasn't Elite 11, Griffin wasn't Elite 11, Newton wasn't Elite 11....

That's four in the last five years already. Or is there some nuance to the idea of "finalist" that I'm missing?

You're correct.

No doubt about it though - lots of great QBs are in the Elite 11. I would love to fill AU's QB slot every year with one.

There's 18 finalists and 11 are chose to be called "Elite". The wiki page only shows the 11

Ah, okay. That really kind of diminishes the factoid. It's basically saying that, out of the top 18 high school quarterbacks, there's a good chance one of them will eventually be the Heisman winner in a year when the award goes to a quarterback. Not exactly a stunning stat, especially when being a top quarterback also means you're likely to go to a top school with significant media exposure to help any Heisman campaign along.

That would be like claiming McD AA Finalists as being the same as McD AA.

No one does this.

Jameis Winston's Elite 11 finalists class:

Austin Appleby; Purdue
Neal Burcham; SMU
Shane Dillon; Colorado
Bart Houston; Wisconsin
Chad Kelly; Clemson -> Mississippi
Zach Kline; California
Jeff Lindquist; Washington
Tanner Mangum; Brigham Young Elite 11 MVP
Zeke Pike; Auburn -> Louisville
Chad Voytik; Pittsburgh
Jameis Winston; Florida State Elite 11 MVP

Hardly an indicator of success overall. Loads of crap college QBs.

Nobody is saying all of them will have success. Most do not. But the stat is there.

It's a useless stat.

It's like saying Jamarcus Russell was a great LSU QB, LSU produces great QBs.

Most of the kids named as elite 11 finalists end up being crap in college than good. Just because 1 or 2 kids out of 11 end up winning something big doesnt mean the elite 11 is an indicator of anything.

So can you track down which QB is the anomaly? I assume it's Manziel, but I haven't verified that.

Except it isn't.
