I was on another site and an Auburn alumni posted a message that was well thought out. Here it is...

So after seeing my son being a regular poster here for a while, and as an avid supporter of my alma mater, Auburn now for 22 years, I feel the need to post some common sense out there.

I think its obvious at this point that Cam Newton did not follow the rules. After details of his personals came out, I am not happy with my school right now, not because he and his actions have disgraced the athletic program, but because his PREVIOUS actions indicated that he would be a poor fit for the school, and is not the type of human being that a true supporter of the University (not just the sports programs) would want to be part of our family.

My school is in the news today for one thing. Just one thing. That our athletic director is standing adamantly behind someone who, no question, gives us a tremendous opportunity to win a national championship in football, but who I feel is not seeing the bigger picture, because his presence at this point at the school is compromising everything the school is trying to accomplish. I've heard plenty of rumors, lots of unnamed sources, and the only thing I will admit is that Cam Newton is a disgrace to my university, but I DONT KNOW to what extent, and where the truth lies (usually somewhere in the middle, as my faith refuses me to believe that all of the allegations could possibly be true, no family can be born that rotten)

We are about to complete a new, 100 million dollar basketball stadium. We have approved a new, state of the art, 15 million dollar football practice and training complex, which will be competitive with any national program. We are about to build a new campus. IN CHINA. We recently completed one of the most advanced electronic systems out there (more advanced than Johns Hopkins) for our beloved Auburn Hospital.

But no one hears about that. All we hear are things about Cam Newton. You're also a fool if you think that Cam Newton is the first offense, or the only current offense.

As a couple of others here have already pointed out, we also have a famed booster named Bobby Lowder. Auburn, in 2001, dismissed a University President, William Muse because he elected override the athletics department and self report certain violations that ended up placing the University on probation in football. He was a true Auburn man, dedicated to what colleges are supposed to do. Educate people. He was the one who also tried to drive Tommy Tubberville away, flying his own private jet to meet Bobby Petrino. He also installed, on our board, a lackey (Richardson) as university president, and ensured the appointment of several close friends of his to the Board. Over the last few months, that same board voted to raise tuition by 13% this year, the largest single raise in the history of the University. What was interesting about it, is that none of that money was appropriated. Nobody knows where its going. They told us that the raise in tuition was "to encourage people to graduate in 4 years".

I, along with many like minded supporters of any school, love my sports teams. But I love my University more. My success today, I credit to the experiences I had at Auburn. And I am afraid, for my school, that the athletics has trumped the fact that Auburn is, at its roots, an educational institution that has a great tradition and athletics program, not the other way around. My school now, I fear, likely faces possibly a death penalty, all for the sake of a national championship.

I for one, as a supporter both in spirit and financially to my home for life, do not believe any gain is worth the loss of integrity of the University, and I cannot support the actions of an athletics department that is so willing to sacrifice the INTEGRITY of the entire school for a national championship in any sport.
