Will USCe offer Kirby Smart or go after a proven HC?

He allegedly wants the job and is allegedly high up on our AD's alleged list.

Their have been a ton of rumors on SC boards for the past year or two about his supposed high interest in the job, and Tanner's supposedly really high on him.

It's all speculation now

He gone. Saban is going to be pissed, but he will basically call the D.

I'm not too savvy on football coaches. Will need to Google Kirby Smart and see who he is exactly. Don't kill me people, only been following football for a couple of years. Still have a lot to learn.

Ok, so he's currently the defensive coordinator at Alabama? Been there since 2008? Has an annual salary of $1,280,000? Sounds pretty nice.

Assuming we could offer him around the same money as Spurrier, which I also Googled and found out to be 4 Million, it would of course be a great increase in your income. So, 3 million more than you already make, you can now be a head coach instead of just a defensive coordinator...has also shown interest in the job in the recent past...sounds plausible I guess.

Now of course the downside is the team he's going to is a mess right now to put it kindly. You have to take that into account also. Why would he want to leave the all-dominant Alabama for a team that's nowhere near the skill level as the team you're currently coaching? Is the money and the shown interest going to be enough to grab him?

You don't have to worry about age being an issue since he's only 39. My biggest question overall I guess would be if he could really be a Head Coach for his first time ever and actually be successful?

I've always wondered why Kirby hasn't gotten more looks as a HC. I know everyone claims Saban calls the defense, but I would say: who cares? The guy has basically been learning at the feet of the best college coach in our generation, he's bound to have picked up a few things. Not to mention I don't think Saban hires dumb people nor does he have much tolerance for them (Kiffin being the obvious exception), and he's kept Kirby around for a long time.

If he's ready to make his move he seems like he'd be a solid pickup.

If he gets the offer, he should take it for sure. USCe is a good (not great) program, plus it's not in the SEC West.

I think a great fit...

Kirby hasn't earned the HBC's $4M salary. Assume he would be considerably less than that

Kirby Smart is gonna have to start thinking about his next move eventually. Saban won't be at Bama forever.

It could work. But I could see it easily not working out if he were to coach at SC.

Well the point I meant to make is that they're going to have to offer him more than he is making right now. I didn't mean he'd start with Spurrier's salary or anything.

Id be ok with him leaving. He has been good for us and it's not like I want him out, but his name gets brought up every time as a replacement when Saban retires. I'd feel a lot more comfortable about that idea if he went else where as a Hc and had success. I don't want to hand the reins to an unproven Hc only to discover then that being the main dude ain't his forte.

The market sets the price. We are overpaying Sumlin but the alternative was to watch him go to USCw

If he leaves, what makes you think he would come back? Chances are if he does leave the team continues to decline slowly and Saban jumps off a sinking ship. Kirby of all people know what expectations would be in following Nick. He might not want to go. I'm thinking they go after a high profile coach, maybe a pro assistant or a Harbaugh type guy.

Maybe he doesn't. I don't think Smarts departure would result in a gradual decline into mediocrity. I think the opportunity to prove himself outside of Sabans shadow is worth it. Especially if he is to be considered a serious candidate for Sabans replacement in the near future. Maybe he'll kill it as USCe and won't come back. I'd be ok with that, at least we would know what kind of coach he is.
