I was stationed at USAFA for 5 years. One big difference for the cadets and a 'regular' college, is that the Service Academy is literally their entire life for 4 years. Most don't have cars, go to town a lot...the Academy is their entire world. It's pretty unique.

Oh I have many academy friends whom, not surprisingly, the rest of the officer corps call "ringknockers". They describe their experience at the Academy as a great $275,000 education shoved up your arse one nickel at a time.

and? who cares. the corps may represent a small minority of the a&m student base, but its fricking 2000+. to insinuate that a place like a&m or Virginia tech doesn't have a military background or culture just because "most of their graduates do not enter the military" is stupid as frick

Don't act like it's the same as Annapolis or West Point though.

I had a friend who attended the AF Academy visit me at A&M. He commented several times that it would be damn hard to be a cadet in the Corps at A&M, while other civilian students did their own things. He used to say how much it would suck to live the 24/7 Corps lifestyle at A&M (e.g., uniforms on campus, dorms, CQ, PT, etc.), knowing that the rest of the campus was living the college life.

His quote: "At the Academy, we were isolated in our own world, so that helped. We didn't have to see normal college kids doing typical college shite. That would've been brutal."

I'll plan on purchasing a ring one day. People who aren't poor and enter a learned profession frequently wear them in professional settings.

And I'm not ashamed to admit that I'm an obnoxious fan who is always looking for an opportunity to talk about my alma mater.

I can believe it. Those were/are some of the best kids in the world. I know it sounds kind of hokey but it really was an honor to be associated with them.

He is all engineering and don't remember what discipline he is focused on. If I had to guess it would be Electrical.

USNA doesn't select until 1st Class (Senior) year. Probably the same for Air Force. Believe me, if he gets selected for pilot, everyone will know about it (ref. joke: How do you know you're talking to a pilot? He'll tell you.)

That's no lie. Military pilots actually have a pimp way of walking. Little known fact.

Honestly just remembering back to those couple of months I wore my hs ring makes me cringe. A college ring, yeah no. Never.

It's from a combination of all the slinging we give to chicks, and the bending over we had to do in training and face during every flight.
