I think the majority of Bama fans WANT to believe Curry was forced out, so that they can maintain the idea that a "shitty coach" like him wouldn't walk away from that job.
The circumstances were no different than Fran or Wade leaving. The environment around the program/attitude of the admin was shitty, so they moved on to greener pastures.

He was and still is only the 2nd HC to ever voluntarily leave Alabama for another job.
Didn't Perkins leave to go to the NFL?

Wade had won two NCs, then had a string of three subpar seasons. All the sniping and grumbling about his performance made him promise in the summer that 1930 was going to be his last season. He ran the table and won the NC that year, and despite the sudden change of attitude and clamor for him to stay, he kept his word and moved on to Duke.
Curry had just won the Tide's first SEC Championship since Bear Bryant, had improved records every year since he'd been there, was undefeated against Tennessee and Penn State (which was an annual game in his tenure) yet because he had never beaten Auburn, he was rewarded with a new contract that removed his power to hire and fire coaches on his staff. He decided the grass was greener (bluer?) in Kentucky and bailed.

This is spot on. Curry wasn't the best coach Bama has ever had but he was a hell of a lot better than DuBose, Shula, and arguably better than Fran. He really was in an unenviable position being relatively soon after Coach Bryant and him not having connections to Bama. He was viewed as an outsider by a lot of Bama fans and alums. Not sure he could have ever changed that perception if he had stayed for a decade or more. Bama was better off that he left because we got Gene Stallings who was a better fit and better coach. Despite all the barbs I've seen Bama people throw at Curry over the years, I think it's beyond question that he is a fine person and genuinely cared about his players. Guys who played for him will tell you as much.

Wade was from Durham and returned to his hometown.
Perkins was informed he wouldn't be retained.
Curry was "offered" the absolutely shittiest contract imaginable, knowing he wouldn't take it.
The administration had zero plans of keeping Perkins and Curry, and leveraged it so they would leave without firing them. You're talking about technicalities but I'm talking about the real world of what actually went down. Like I said, Bobby Bowden wasn't fired either. But we all know what happened.

Wade didn't like President Denny. The two of them were at constant odds with each other. Denny would attend practice every day and would offer Wade suggestions on how the team should be run. Wade, much like Saban, was a perfectionist and control freak and this didn't sit too well with him. When Wade went into that little slump from 1927-1929, Denny was constantly on his back and Wade finally had enough of it.

You should take a look at how the administration treated Curry. They took an absolute shite on him with that contract offer. There was no way they expected him to take it.

And how did that work out for you? He made one of the worst coaching decisions of the last 10-15 years. He had a solid foundation at Alabama and was rolling. Of course, it worked out even better for Alabama. We could have avoided the Mike Price debacle and Shula years, but I think all of that was worth the wait for Nick Saban.

We were fine with him leaving. We were on major probation and there really wasn't much he could have done in the way of recruiting for the next three years or so. It was the way he left that pissed us off. He left in the middle of the night and didn't even bother to say good-bye to his players.
That sucks and all, but from a fan's perspective it was the fact that he phoned in the Iron Bowl because he had already mentally unpacked his bags in College Station that hurt.

True. But that didn't come out until after he left.

The worst part was the story of Justin Smiley asking him on the plane ride back from the Hawai'i game if he was leaving. He told him with a straight face he was at Alabama for the long haul. He was gone the following Monday.

Fran, and the dumpster fire his career became at A&M and continues to be, is the living, breathing, personification of the old saying "karma is a bitch"

You got a guy who left the state of Texas to go to Alabama to go back to Texas before the weight of huge NCAA penalties set in on Alabama. Good job. Seriously, thank you for getting him out of Tuscaloosa in a hurry though
