after 1 year?

Maybe more consistent success would warrant this salary, but not after 1 year.

Notre Dame gave Charlie Weis a significant pay increase after 1 year as well.

Not saying it will, but could come back to bite A&M.

Well, then, that sounds like a good deal that's based on last year's performance and designed to keep him there without strapping down aTm.

I don't know how this contract backfires on Hyman. A&M absolutely cannot afford to lose Sumlin and they aren't overpaying him.

Hyman has been VERY low key compared to his predecessor Byrne. If there was one guy that loved to take credit for everything it was Dollar Bill. He did a solid job but he was a serious egomaniac that could give Dodds a run for his money when he wanted to. I'm pleased so far with Hyman but he hasn't had to hire a coach yet in any sport and his legacy is going to be how the Kyle rebuild is handled as well as his ability to get every facility up to elite SEC standards. Sumlin was on board before him so he can't really take credit there but if he keeps him that will be enough to make me happy.

Fair enough, but you're going to find Hyman is one of the most egotistical ADs on the face of the earth today ... he can be good when he is good, or very bad when he is bad. Just hope his wife does not take to holding any personal grudges against any of your student athletes, let's put it that way.

Yeah, I mean if Sumlin pans-out and all, you're right. But was Sumlin really going to leave after one year? Doubtful. Whereas, these days it is happening all over ... coaches, in their first year that do well with other coach's players seem to get these enormous contracts and then they settle back and underachieve from that point forward. Seems like the CEO think to do would have been to have Sumlin coach another year, then extend the contract out to five at a renegotiated amount ... as it were now, if Sumlin stumbles, A&M is going to have a helluva pay-out to shell-out and, ask Tennessee, that can catch-up to a program in a hurry.

Hyman can spend money - he does know how to spend money on facilities, that is his forte'. But I'd be willing to bet a dollar to a hole in a doughnut that Hyman has inherited a work in progress with a lot of funding and design plans already in place? He did here. Mike McGee left him tons of money, funding, designs, long range plans and property to play with, and Hyman finished the deal and took credit for all of it. I'll be shocked if Hyman does anything new, from scratch, before he retires out there.

Hyman is a manager, a good one to some degree I suppose, but according to things we have read about him from the TCU people, even from the VMI and Miami OH people, he wears out his welcome fast and usually leaves not being very well liked by his coaches or administrators.

When he left here I can tell you for a fact that Spurrier and Tanner were glad to see him go. He hired Martin and Staley but he left a lot of other hires untouched that needed touching. Staley had already learned her lessons about him and Martin wasn't here long enough yet to understand Hyman's ways - but a lot of people that worked for him were exceeding glad to see him go. Most were simply tired of him telling them all how great he is all the time.

Hyman got Frank Martin to come to South Carolina.

Bill Byrne hired Billy Kennedy and gave Franchione a raise after our first loss to BAYLOR in 20 years.

I'll take my chances with an AD that doesn't have a weekly newsletter talking about how great he is.

How does A&M feel about losing Klingsbury?

No ill will. He was here for the amount of time most people thought he'd be here.

I'm with EKG on that one.

That single move nearly ruined A&M athletics forever. Seriously. I am not just spewing BS. That could have crippled A&M athletics for a VERY long time.

after sherman it must really be fun to be able to reward a guy that actually performs at or above expectations as opposed to below them. now if he can just get his players to go to classes.

Bill Byrne fired our long term baseball coach by meeting the team in front of Olsen Field after they were returning from a road trip. He was wearing an Hawaiian shirt and some shorts with his sac hanging out of a leg hole.

Yeah, he was not well liked you could say.

(Mark Johnson needed to be let go, but he deserved more than that.)

That's an interesting perspective on Hyman and it differs from what a lot of people were saying on CockyTalk at least when we hired him. He had a lot of praise there. Personally I have no idea if he ends up being the right hire but he probably fits where we are right now.

A lot of what you described in terms of plans in action and money to spend is where A&M is right now. The Kyle renovation is already being tabbed as the largest single project in CFB history in terms of scope and dollars. He has been a LOT quieter than Byrne was so far but I can see how he could rub people wrong. He seems a bit aloof and doesn't lack for self confidence. Most AD's fit that profile though, at least the "Professional AD" types. A&M has had some really bad AD's in their history. Most were just the football coach. We had a couple "Good Ol' Boy" hires". Byrne was our first true "Professional AD" and he put a huge focus on bringing up the Non Football programs and was very successful for the most part.

We do have a very visible President and VP of Marketing along with a HC that is media friendly but I'm sure Hyman will interject himself as well. Personally I don't care about attitude if the results are there. He got the keys handed to him of a school that has been Top 10 in the Director's Cup the last few years but needed to fix football. We also need an Outdoor T&F facility and a few other things. Fix that and I'm happy. He also needs to address our basketball program which has slipped. Ags have already been preparing our anus's for ticket price increases and pressure for more donations.

As for Sumlin he actually did get some calls already and there is a lot of NFL talk stirring. He's a media savvy, AA coach that is known for being an excellent manager. Oh, and he's winning. If A&M doesn't pay him someone else assuredly will. Essentially all this deal did was take him from the bottom to the middle of the SEC which is appropriate. Not many SEC coaches make less than $3 mill anymore and that isn't going down.

He seemed to be trying to make up for it in the Liucci interview. Wow, that guy can talk. A lot. Not complaining, but he's definitely not a guy I want to drink beer with.

Not bad for a head coach that finished 3rd in his division.

Nor is it a bad deal for a coach who finished top 5 nationally in his first year.
