His game management is terrible. You only get so many series on offense. He wastes them. Clock management is also something he seems to ignore.

Vandy players need to stop acting like "oh no, here we go again." when the other team comes back on them. They start sulking around and acting like a loss is inevitable. (although it is most of the time, they don't need to think that way)

Agreed. He and his staff lost that game for them last night. It doesn't help that the team simply has no experience winning games like that. They have no idea how to win and the coaching staff didn't do them any favors last night.

Also they change quarterbacks seemingly every series. Not easy to play well at QB when you know your leash is that short.

I'm on the fence about Mason.

On one hand, what he is doing defensively with limited talent is so impressive. On the other, he doesn't seem like a great head coach.

But how much can we reasonably expect from Vandy?

It does seem like they are one good to great offensive coordinator away from making serious noise, but not sure they'll ever get there.

This is what has our fans so upset this morning, especially when Mason specifically said that he wasn't doing that this year. Nice drive to go up 10-0 and then inexplicably switch QBs and start two drives deep on your own side of the field. Two quick 3 and outs and then put Shurmur back in but he was never the same after that.

When Mason put in the backup in the 2nd quarter after the offense had been clicking so well, and they had 2 straight 3-and-outs, I figured USC would win. The offense looked totally out of sync for the rest of the game. Mason has no one to blame for that loss except himself, in my opinion.

You're right on both points.

Meh. Honestly, like several times last year, Mason put the players in a position to win. You may not like everything Mason did, and you may not like the QB changeup, but Schurmur was terrible. Terrible. He is inaccurate to the point of uselessness and its not like he is running anywhere. They have a big problem. 8-22 ain't gonna cut it. Running up the middle looked unstoppable at times but then they would try to throw twice in a row. I think they would have been better off just running 3 times in a row every time.

He was 4-6 after the drive to put them up 10-0. Why pull him just for the sake of giving Freebeck snaps? Why?

He'll be our next DCoordinator if Paul Rhoads takes a job elsewhere

He was 4-6 for 25 yards, 16 that came on one play. And you could see that anything beyond 2 yards had a 80% of missing by a mile. I think they knew he was suspect and planned to see what someone else could do. I don't think that sitting out a series caused him to overthrow, underthrow, chuck it out of bounds almost every time he threw it.

It was the same kid who completed 40% of his passes last year.

Ah, the old Mississippi State early 2000's strategy, I know it well. Run the ball 3 times and punt, like God intended.

Mason said he wasn't going to do the revolving QBs again this year and went against his word in the first half of the first game.

The timing was just ridiculous for the change. Up 10-0 with momentum, backed up on your own 7 yard line and that's when you choose to bring in Freebeck? Is that really the scenario to "see what someone else could do"? There's no defending that. Completely sabotaged any momentum they had.

ETA: Freebeck played two series. Two 3-and-outs that went so fast that they just felt like one series.

Mason showed last night that nothing has changed and it's time for him to go. I thought he learned that playing musical QBs was a bad idea. It seems like he goes away from what works on offense.

I think you nailed it. There was never any threat of Vandy challenging deep. Muschamp said same in his post game - he mentioned that Vandy's offensive plan was shuttle and screen passes and running the ball.

I think Mason wanted to try the other qb with a two score lead as he knew his offense couldn't stay so limited for the full game without SC stacking the LOS. Mason was probably proven correct after the backup was ineffective and he went back to the starter and a limited pass game - but SC adjusted and Vandy didn't score again.

Made a mistake switching QB's in the 2nd Qtr. Momentum killer.

He hasn't grown as a HC one bit. Looking at a 4-8 type year again, which probably won't be enough to get him fired since he seems to recruit good kids and academically the team is performing wonderfully. It should get him fired though, his conservative philosophy has cost him a bowl last season and will again this year.

He's a nice guy and a very good defensive coach, he's just clueless as a HC.

Too early to pull the pitcher in the 4th inning. Vandy has won a CWS, you think the coach would know better.
