Hard to imagine Paul Johnson's triple option at Alabama.

I was at that game. Had a sign "will coach bama for food"

Got some laughs and some jeers from bama folk. Of course, I was in purple and gold attire.

Yes, that was around the time Alabama fans in my office would stand on their pulpit to denounce Auburn's Tommy Tuberville for being a liar who had the lowest moral conscience to lie about ever wanting to leave Ole Miss.

Of course when Nick Saban repeatedly lied to the Miami media about being interested in the Alabama job, they changed their tune to say, "Well what was he supposed to do?"

The 180 that took place was quite astounding.

People forget just how bleak that coaching search was looking for Alabama before Saban 180'd

It was actually somewhat embarrassing for the program during much of the process

That's what I noticed. Not interested and a possibility at the same time

It was almost as impressive as the 180 the media and rival fans did when Saban took the job. It went from a jolly good time with everyone hammering and laughing at Bama fans and the program for being completely delusional and unrealistic about who we were going after and that Saban would never consider an Alabama offer. People even suggested Shula was as good a coach as we could get and we were stupid for getting rid of him. When Saban arrived, no one in the media admitted they were wrong. Instead, they acted like Saban was the devil incarnate for daring to leave an NFL franchise for a college job. No one had to eat their words when it became clear they were wrong.

My favorite was Dan Lebatard saying something to the effect that he wouldn't do anything at Alabama because he won't be able to recruit against and compete with Georgia, Florida, LSU, Auburn, Tennessee, etc and that he would either leave in 3 or 4 years for another job if he's successful or he'd flame out in that time. Lebatard basically acted like the Alabama program was incapable of winning more than 8 games a year.

Wasn't that line used by Bama fans to describe Tuberville?

I don't remember a whole lot about Tuberville's pine box stuff until after Saban came, Auburn folks started calling him a two faced liar and Alabama people laughed and said that it was basically the exact same thing Tuberville did.

The Tubs stuff was before the age of social media and message boards for the most part. Stuff like that didn't reach the masses nearly as much as it does now.

But yea, of all the hatred towards Tubs, I only really remember hearing the pine box stuff a handful of times pre-Saban. Now Ole Miss people on the other hand.......

I've said this before, Bama was in the right place at the right time, had Saban not been available at that time who knows what direction they would have gone.

Yep - stars aligned. However, I don't think Saban would have left the Dolphins for just any job either. And if Mal hadn't started the facilities upgrades a few years earlier, in the midst of our worst period since the 1950s I might add, we would not have been able to get Saban.
