caught at exactly the right time as it was starting to spread and any longer and I'd have been dead at 21 despite not having the usual risk factors. Owe my life to my mom who spotted it and forced me to go get it checked.

How did she know/what was the sign that tipped her off? I have a family history of skin cancer/melanoma and I've been terrified of it. I'm really bad about not wearing sunscreen too. I had a full check by a dermatologist 2 years ago and had a spot cut out just precautionary, but I'm 21 now so your story got me thinking again.

I agree. My money is on Eric Berry in this fight. The cancer is coming across the middle on him and I pray and know he is fixing to lay his hardest hit yet on it.

That's really shitty to hear, I really like Berry and hate hearing when someone so young and promising gets sick like this.

Leukemia/lymphoma is one of the leading causes of death for men 18-31. The NFL needs to start focusing on this instead of devoting all of their attention towards pinkwashing and domestic violence. I hope that Eric gets well and uses his situation to make the best of everything.

My mom is very aware of stuff like that because she's always worked in the medical field. But she saw a mole on my back when I was changing shirts, which was odd because being away at college the odds of that happening were slim anyway (I don't really get moles so that was likely part of it but she is super-cautious when it comes to her kids' health). I thought she was being paranoid for making me go and even the doc didn't think it would turn out to be melanoma because it was atypical/non-textbook. It was large enough and dark but it didn't have the odd shapes or thickness they look for - very thin and perfectly round and normal looking instead of jaggy. But to be safe they did the biopsy.

My advice, especially since it runs in your family, is to be super cautious any time you see anything that looks new and don't be afraid to push given your family history.

AND have someone else check where you can't see. It's worth it because melanoma is the most untreatable and most deadly cancer if it isn't caught in time. It's a horrible way to die so shyness isn't an option with your history, imo. But you have a great cure rate if caught early.

Thanks for the response I'll hopefully go for a whole body check over Christmas break when I'm home again. I'm pretty paranoid about moles so I'm always looking for new ones.

I know, I really need to do better with that. I have an aunt who is fighting melanoma right now though. It's a bitch. She's had almost all of her nodes removed and is undergoing chemo right now. Her check-ups have been good but she's got about 5 months left of chemo. It's rough shite.

Absolutely better safe than sorry.

ETA: Also the standard rule is if it gets to the size of a pencil eraser have it checked. And of course, if it grows more than it has been, get it checked!

Damn, this sucks to hear. Berry will crush this like he does ball carriers. Dude is a beast safety, one of the best I've ever seen and I'm confident he will be back wrecking shite on the field soon enough.

Had a friend die of melanoma and it was horrifying. Can't think of many worse ways to go.

You certainly dodged a bullet. Mine wasn't melanoma but life changes when the doc says the word "cancer".

There really aren't. I thank my lucky stars that when I was diagnosed I had no clue what it could do. When I eventually did find out both from others telling me and an friend's mom dying from it, I was shocked. I'm so incredibly grateful because I know how lucky I was.

It's incredibly scary. I didn't even know what to do. I just went into complete shock - my parents understood it more than I did at the time but I understood later. Happy to hear you beat yours as well! I pray for a cure every day. Such a horrific illness.
