Wasn't there a record of his text messages and he was texting his lady friend Donna Something mintues before Arky kicked off in a bowl game? Wasn't Nutt's wife part of an email campaign that trashed Mitch Mustain?

Yes and yes.

I would also agree that he's a real good motivator.

There was a rumor when he Hired Malzahn that he was going to turn Gus loose with the playbook and then scaled it way back to what he wanted.

ultimately that's why Gus bolted to Tulsa.

Nutt was doing pretty well for Arkansas while Gus was still coaching high school. Nutt stayed at Arkansas after being offered better jobs, and then he knew they were planning on getting rid of him, and before they could he left for Ole Miss.

Everyone told us that when we sent him packing. It took Petrino three years to out do him right after. Try again.

He was gifted 2 of the greatest players in Arkansas history (Matt Jones and Mcfadden) and couldn't do shite with either of them despite the SEC overall being pretty bad.

WRONG

His two years prior to hiring Gus he had a losing record. Like someone else said, Gus was forced/gifted to the guy along with one of the best recruiting classes in Arkansas history. Due to his micromanaging Gus bolted along with most of the Springdale 5. The team the year after was still talented and should have not been 500 in conference play.

Most of the talent he recruited was from in state. Why is that a big deal? You're the only major program here. Kids grow up being Hogs. Given the chance most would walk through hell to make it to the hill.

He didn't bolt BEFORE leaving. He was forced out and they allowed him to save face in the way they did it.

Yes, he was. Still took him less than half the time to eclipse Nutt's accomplishments

He won the SEC West twice, now your team hasn't been able to beat an SEC West school since 2012.

Honestly if you just glance at the record books he seems like a fairly decent coach. That is why you fans of schools other then Ole Miss and Arkansas just don't get it.

Nutt had a tendency to dog it on the recruiting trail Yes, he did get some great players during his time at both schools, but he really wasn't driven to go out and get the absolute best class that he could. His teams were not dragged to greatness, he was willing to settle for mediocre and quite happy with it.

He also played to not lose. Yes, you let a Houston Nutt coached team get a big lead on you then you were doomed. But in tight games he squeezed down on the offense and went super safe. Only against Texas did he really cut loose and throw caution to the wind... which is possibly why his teams did really well against the Horns.

He was a very decent mid level coach, who, with the right players falling into his lap, could reel off a ten win season. He could also easily go 4-8 or 5-7 without breaking a sweat. With Nutt you might be very good one year, you might be very bad one year, but odds are you were going to be very average most years.

Every year over the 10 year period Nutt coached at Arkansas, the team never failed to follow their first SEC loss with another SEC loss (at least one). With his best 2 teams ('06, '07), he finished the '06 season with losses to LSU and Florida in the SEC Championship game and loses the bowl game to Wisconsin.

He then 'demotes' his 'OC of the year' by bringing in David Lee to 'hep out' with the offense and supposedly establish a passing game while at the same time defending his choice in '06 to rarely pass the ball, reasoning that 'it wasn't needed', considering our level of talent with running backs. After insulting and running off the OC (Malzahn), he then opens the 2007 season with 3 consecutive SEC losses to Alabama, Kentucky, and Auburn.

Nutt can and will screw up a mayo sandwich.

I probably have a different opinion of Nutt than most Hog fans.
I thought he did a lot for the program. He united and woke up a fan base that had basically been lulled to sleep during the Hatfield,Crowe,Kines,Ford eras. Ford brought in decent talent and the 1st couple of years, Nutt got the most out of that talent. That first team was literally two plays away from playing for a Natty. He recruited well early in his tenure but that dwindled later in his career here.
If anything I would say his three big downfalls here were:
1. playing the political game with daddy Frank and allowing Broyles too much control over staff decisions.
2. He has been loyal to a fault with assistant coaches and a couple of them (Markuson and Shibest) simply aren't very good coaches. Shibest took a HS all american kicker and screwed up his mechanics so bad he couldn't make a PAT before he was done.
3. He had a tendency to play favorites. I am good friends with a former player who said "Houston had "his boys" and they were gonna play no matter what."

All in all, Houston is a good coach who can motivate and build a program. He just has never shown the ability to sustain success. Always seemed like he would win one he wasn't supposed to and lose one he wasn't supposed to.

This one sentence says a lot.

It's the very point I was trying to make with the mayo sandwich analogy.

He did some good things.. but he also did a lot of really stupid shite too. He had some good teams yet could never fully understand to be great, you have to have a quarterback who can make plays with his arm when it called for it. Clint Stoerner came close but he was erratic a lot of the time too. Matt Jones....hell of an athlete but not really the answer. Then he gets a 5-star QB and WR...runs em out of town. That's his legacy as the coach of Arkansas football, far as I'm concerned.
