Saban didn't follow Ears.

Alabama is lucky to have them both as coaches. Why should a fan choose one over the other?

Bryant then coached 20 more years, won 5 more national titles, and 12 more conference titles.

Also, he only had three bad seasons in that time, and segregation probably had a lot to do with the first 2, with the other being his final year.

He's the best ever, and it's really not that difficult of a decision for me. I understand others may feel differently.

IMO the Bear should get at least 1/4 of the credit for Saban's second title actually. Saban wouldn't have gotten into the BCSNC game last year without the Bama brandname that the Bear established.

Also RJYH, that pic is freaky

If you are comparing Shula to Ears you must not know much Alabama history. Go read a book.

Win percentage for every Alabama coach with a statue on the Walk of Champions over their first half-decade in Tuscaloosa

Coach Years Win Pct.
Nick Saban 2007-2011 0.806
Gene Stallings 1990-1994 0.698
Paul W. Bryant 1958-1962 0.806
Frank Thomas 1931-1935 0.854
Wallace Wade 1923-1927 0.826

quote:

It should be noted that Saban's total without the games vacated by the NCAA is .821 and Stallings' jumps to .833 when the forfeited contests from 1993 are accounted for. So, by this measure Saban's production on the field has actually been better than Bryant's over the same span of their career at the Capstone. And both of them are significantly behind Alabama's three other National Championship-winning coaches for that same period.

What is the number of championships Saban would have to win in order to be considered better than Bryant? Honestly, I don't think the numbers should be equal. Winning in today's environment is much tougher than what it use to be. Or am I just completely wrong here?

I was gonna post this. Saban, with the recruiting he's had and continues to have, should rise even higher the next couple of years. If he were to go 11-2 the next two yrs, that would be an 84.6% average, and I think it's reasonable to believe he won't have more than 4 losses the next two yrs, and could possibly have less.

eta- also, another way to look at it is this. In his tenure at Bama, he's won a National Championship 40% of the season's he's coached. If he can manage one this yr, he'll have coached his teams to NC's 50% of the season's he's coached.

Having said all that, it's fruitless to compare our coach to any of our past coaches. Bama has been blessed to have had some of the finest in the game and they each continue to build onto the tradition that Bama now enjoys. I'm going to continue to enjoy the ride we're on now and hope that once it ends, the administration makes another wise choice for the next coach to lead the Tide.

Uh, one conference title in 12 years means DYNASTY now? Wow. Lots of dynasties around the sec.

I don't think this fan base will settle for another bad coach like Shula or Price. I think Smart leaves after this season, and becomes a successful head coach. Down the line when Saban is going to retire he gives Smart a call and our administration will jump at the chance to bring him back to carry on the Saban ideals. Smart would rather be at Bama than UGA down the road anyway.

Maybe Smart will be successful, and then again, maybe he won't. Saban's assistant coaches haven't exactly made good names for themselves once they're on their own.

Bryant built Bama football. It would not be what it is, a storied program Saban inherited, with Bryant and his legacy/legend. Hold off on comparisons until Saban has been there 20 yrs. Threads like this are dumb!

Saban is winning with Bear's program......

Bama just finally went out and found someone with coaching ability to get Bama back to where it used to be. Now, if ONLY Saban would retire

One can hope Bama goes and gets another dipshit
