One of the best stories I've ever heard.

Oh man, I haven't thought about the Mouth of the Mississippi in ages. Growing up in the Delta, I'd hear him on the radio all the time whenever my family would drive long distances. My favorite comedian that nobody outside the South has ever heard of.

Heard him speak at the banquet before the 1991 Liberty Bowl.

Helluva public speaker. I don't think the USAF players knew who the heck he was, but they gave him a standing "O" at the end.

my take on it too. didn't really find it all that funny, but based on the comments in this thread he's got some broad appeal apparently.

My Daddy grew up on a farm in South Alabama with his mother and younger brother. Granny was a single mom in the 50s and 60s - my Grandfather passed when my dad was just 14 years old. She was an RN and she went into Dothan to work at the hospital every night. My Dad went to Troy and started working for NCR in the 70s and eventually became a self taught computer programmer.

I don't think he's ever stepped foot in a shopping mall. Probably hasn't watched a regular TV show since "The Dukes of Hazard" and "All In the Family". Hasn't seen a movie in the theatre since "E.T.". If it isn't ESPN or FoxNews, he doesn't have time for it.

He doesn't have a damn to give about comedians.

But, man, he LOVED him some Jerry Clower. He used to put on one of his records on Friday nights and laugh his arse off.

The only other comedian he likes is Eddie Murphy.

Thanks for posting. It made me smile and made me think of my Daddy laughing so hard he would cry and how funny that was to me as a little girl.

Nothing wrong with redneck humor, though. I can watch Monty Python, a Zucker-Abrahams movie, "Seinfeld," and Jerry Clower all in a row, chase the marathon with a reading of "Candide," and find every last one of them hilarious. If it doesn't appeal to you, that's just how it goes. Nobody likes everything. I can't stand that Larry the Cable Guy schtick, myself. But liking Clower or Larry can cross all manner of cultures.
