Buff brick doesn't have to look like shite. It just depends on the style.

Have you seen TCU's campus? Good Lord it's ugly.

What?

I know architectural preferences are subjective, but the campus is hideous.

This building style at University of Arkansas is a direct approximation of the Gothic style buildings at Oxford and Cambridge. As is this:

And this:

It's a less-ornate expression of the same style.

Yale is the same, although more ornate than younger colleges.

It's a style literally referred to as "Collegiate Gothic".

I'm sorry you don't understand architecture better.

Texas tore this old main building down in the 30's... always liked it, not sure of the history behind the decision.

Yep, the 1925 campus plan had the university gradually phasing out the original "red brick" architecture, replacing it with limestone "Gothic" buildings. Even Old Main was set to be replaced by a spire-y gothic cathedral. Everything built between 1925 and 1955 was built according to that plan. Only about 1/3 of what was planned was actually built. The shift to blonde-brick was gradual, and thankfully, they spared Old Main.

The construction of the Centennial Gate is in the spot where a much grander gate was originally intended to go, but couldn't in modern era due to fire-code access requirements.

The university is finally moving back toward gothic and tudor-inspired construction, after decades of ignoring it or half-assing it.

Here's a modern Tudor-inspired dormitory, with a Baby Boom-era International Style Modern dorm in the background.

I'm sure we'll keep at least one or two of those for historical purposes, but those styles are being abandoned in favor of traditional forms.
