No vitriol here. I'm under 40, so I don't "worship" Bryant the way some of the older folks do. At the same time, I don't understand the need to trashtalk a man, 30 years dead, in a thread meant to celebrate his life. That seems pretty vitriolic. To each his own.

Fair enough, however I must wonder if we, as a fan culture, ever get to the point where our adulation stops to only on the field results and stop propping these mostly egomaniacs (across all sports) as some sort of "great" men. Odds are, you and I both know greater men in our own respective communities.

That is a valid point and something I question at times(esp on sports boards). After all, it's just a damned game.

RT87, you are one of my favorite Bama posters on this site and I'm sure you know this guy-as successful as he was, wasn't the squeaky clean demi-god gumps and little brother SEC fans prop him up to be.
He's college football Mickey Mantle, only the Mick stay alive long enough to have him skeletons come out.
You're mad because Bryant won twice as many titles as your school has in its entire history.

If he had've stayed away from smoking Chesterfields he might have lived another ten yrs or so. His ex player, turned coach, Charley Pell used to smoke too and died too young. RIP.
