Paul Myerberg? Alabama hiring Chris Weinke (most recently QB coach for the Rams) as an offensive analyst, @AaronSuttles reports

quote:

Former Florida State quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Chris Weinke has joined the University of Alabama football staff as an offensive analyst, The Tuscaloosa News has learned. Wenike most recently served as the quarterbacks coach with the St. Louis/L.A. Rams. Before that, he was the head coach at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla. Weinke reunites with junior running back Bo Scarbrough, who played his senior season at IMG Academy. Clint Trickett had previously accepted an offensive analyst role with Alabama before receiving a job as the tight ends coach at Florida Atlantic under former UA offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin.

If so, I suppose the next thing y'all will be jealous of will be Bama's Weinke.

His ties to IMG Academy would be huge recruiting-wise.

Does anybody have a serious, non troll opinion/knowledge of his work as a QB coach and developer?

I don't know much about his reputation there.

He was in play for a little bit with the UT opening a while back as well. Ex Heisman winner and has deep ties to IMG. It would be a good pickup imo

Yea, I knew about his IMG connections and that he has been doing QB training since he quit playing.

Considering our situation, my main concern is teaching and development. I know Goff was awful last year, but I'm pretty sure I don't blame that on Weinke. Wasn't sure what his reputation as a teacher was.

Every HC with a lick of sense has at least one person on his staff with major ties to IMG ... I know mUSChamp has (at least one) in Jeff Dillman.

But IMG is a gladiator academy and what matters most is building a relationship before they get there and then having your plant help you to score visits from teammates.

Weinke doesn't just have some ties to it, he literally started it with John Madden.

Goff was the #1 overall pick in the draft and had never called a play in the huddle in his entire career until training camp.

The Ram's front office is full of dipshits for taking him.

Sorry that we don't sit around resting on our laurels. Always looking to get better is the reason we haven't fallen behind.

Glad to see Weinke is being productive in his golden years! It's important the elderly population stay active for physical AND mental health

That's great ... would you mind linking to some quotes from IMG prospects who say they care about who started the academy if you have a moment?

Otherwise, I stick by my post above. His "ties" will have negligible effects on pulling anyone out of IMG that didn't already have Bama markers on them.

It's diminishing returns for Bama. It's like the U.S. claiming our oil and gas prices will drop at Exxon stations because Tillerson is now our Sec of State. That's not how it works.

"Connections" to IMG matters for others, but only insomuch as placing players (as a favor to a solid silent or heavy lean) and for, perhaps, retrieving a rare and/or occasional tip on a player who may have been snubbed by Bama or FSU, et al., at the last minute.

Additionally, having a recent history, of pulling IMG stars, plays far better with current prospects than does laying claim to some former coach or connection or co-founder (sic) ever will. Kids have short memories by nature. It's all about relationships with them .... or what you can give them - or a bit of both.

Weinke was easily #1 on my hot board when VOLS QB coaching position opened up. Of course, Baby shoes Lyle went with Key Bump Canales.

You should trust my opinion because I am an elite football mind on this board. A 1%er, if you will.
