Actually, mine was skewed when Chris Matthews said his leg was tingling when Obama walked into the DNC. Nothig like impartial journalists.

True. When I was at Auburn in the mid-80's I knew my communications degree was not going to be the way to get rich. I didn't care. It was what I wanted to do. It took years before I made enough cash to live w/out roommates. But after 25 years I'm making more money than I ever thought I would. Much more. Of course, that doesn't mean squat in job security the way things are changing. This is a behind-the-scenes TV job.

But if you had a job with an athletics department, you would not be a journalist. YOU WOULD BE WORKING IN PUBLIC RELATIONS.

Public Relations is a form of journalism. And you would be reporting on your department.

Statements like this is exactly why the term "journalism" now is skewed. It's the same reason why you never report on something when your only source is a police scanner. If @IeatzPoSsUm84XOXO tweets the Dan Mullen just bought a recruit a car, are you going to run with that story? No....because there is no credibility established with that person.

That statement is another reason why people's perception of a "journalist" is fricked up. First day of J101 we're told "if you're trying to get rich, leave this class now and go the business school". Your typical J-School graduate isn't seeing dollar signs in his/her eyes after graduation.

All of this. Dr. Husni told us the first day of Journalism 101 if you're looking to get rich in the field, then go into PR.

If you're looking for impartial journalism, one of the last places you want to look is the American media.

Your humorous magazine man holds a doctorate from the University of Missouri, just FYI.

Serious question: How old are you?

yep...and is why I'd like to turn my career path more towards PR than what I do now.

Yep. I went and talked to him about going to grad school and he recommended me going to Mizzou and said he would write me a letter of recommendation.

25 now.

If I were going to journalism for undergrad and location wasn't a huge factor, the four I would look at are Mizzou (probably going here for my masters), Syracuse (their school has connections with ESPN for internships i believe), Northwestern and Columbia.

I asked Dr. Husni what he thought about Florida and he just said "no" :

No question that Mizzou is the best state journalism school in the nation.

It's so good, and the practicum so difficult, that it takes most students 4 1/2 to five years to graduate.

But even in this era of few jobs for journalists, reps from papers and magazines from all over
English-speaking countries descend on Columbia one day a year.

A degree from Mizzou practically guarantees employment chances for the rest of a student's working life.

It also makes it easier to get into the two giant grad schools, Columbia in New York and Northwestern.

Columbia is likely the best journalism school in the world. If you graduate from there, you'll have a job at a major news network somewhere.

Grad school, my friend. Missouri has a working newspaper for undergrads, also it has several specialties. For instance, a sophomore, might be covering the Saint Louis Cardinals. There might be as many as six or seven student reporters and photographers covering a Tiger football game. They also cover the Rams, as well as Mizzou and Columbia communities.

The school also maintains a revolving staff in Jefferson City.

Columbia in New York focuses more on downright, gut-wrenching writing. Also, anyone with a degree who can write stands the best chances. I have helped send two to Columbia, both females, both with English degrees. One graduated from South Carolina with a 3.9--4.0 in her major. The Duke grad graduated in the top 10 percent of her class.

To even be considered at Mizzou, a student needs a portfolio of clips. Mizzou does not start from scratch.

There are several good journalism schools in the SEC.

Writing, for instance, is emphasized at Georgia,Florida and Tennessee. The best and smartest kid I ever hired had a degree in English from Auburn. South Carolina is among the best "copy editing" schools in the country.

But all around, nobody touches Mizzou. Not even close.

Try number 1. But that does not apply to places like Mizzou.

There is one more thing about Mizzou that people should know. After the first year, a student could work as much as 50-60 hours a week.

No argument here. Most Journalism grads are honing their skills by asking who, what, when, where, why and how people like their burgers and fries.

The one thing that is great about our J-School but also awful is that the University owns KOMU, which is the local NBC Affiliate. Great for students to cut their teeth working on broadcast televison, but mostly awful for the people who actually have to watch freshmen/sophomores in college trying to read and report on the news. Ron Burgundy they are not.
