Here's one more reason, and it's such a lame excuse but it did keep me from attending a game with my nephew like I wanted to all year.

I wanted to take my nephew who is 9 to a game, just me and him for some buddy time. The game I went to in September the tailgating was pretty good and lots of partying and booze etc.

I was a little apprehensive about exposing him to that, and then the reputation of LSU fans helped me to decide that I might should wait until he's a little older.

I'm not sure I'd take little kids around the tailgate scene and it's hard to avoid, and makes for a shitty time for me to have to avoid.

Weird. I think USC's avg attendance was actually higher than it's ever been, and I know we had out highest attendance game ever this season.

One thing that bugs the hell out of me is that when I go to a game, I'm basically in a black hole. My cellphone reception is spotty and getting scores from other games requires an act of Congress at Bryant-Denny. I'm a Bama fan but I'm also a big College Football fan. It sucks missing out on other big games.

Also, if Alabama is playing at 8pm, then I probably won't go. It's a pain in the arse to watch a game and then get back to Birmingham around 2am after fighting the traffic.

I heard Joe Montana being interviewed on the Dan Patrick show this morning and he said it best.

"I like watching games on TV. You miss too much when you go to the games."

A lot of people evidently feel that way these days.

I just looked at that list and there were two glaring things that stuck-out.

#1 - there is no way in hell Michigan is averaging 112k plus. They are lying their asses off.

#2 - there is no way in hell that Tennessee averaged 90k this season. They are lying their asses off.

OP:

I like that you included the blurb about face ticket prices. They were absolutely absurd this year, and I thought they were absurd last year.

The cost of tickets and the great quality of large screen TVs are what's behind this. Hell, I have been to games before where we just tailgated and watched it on TV right outside the stadium. I know people with prime season tickets that seldom ever enter the stadium...they just watch from the comfort of their $300K motor home.

The tv coverage is what is hurting the NFL & to a lesser extent, the NBA, too. It's been hurting college basketball for yrs now. College football actual attendance has been going down for several yrs now, and as teams hit a downward cycle, the athletic departments better be preparing for smaller & smaller crowds. It's not a coincidence that league coffers are flowing over, because of the tv contracts, but at the same time, fans in the stands are staying home more & more. I've read that there are only a handful of college athletic programs around the country that are in the black consistently. As in only 4-5-6. LSU makes money each yr & has consistently given money to the school's general funds, to the extent the university is now depending on it as part of its budget. Not a healthy environment.

Coupled with Auburn's less than stellar performance this year, Auburn University continues to push you further and further from campus with parking. It's just a hassle now to go to a game with a family. In 2010, I could easily park at the library and have a reasonable walk and a descent tailgate location. Now, I believe they charge thousands of $ for the same parking spots.

Jay Jacobs, if you're wondering why attendance is slipping:

1- we sucked total arse this year, it was painful to watch.

2- the university continues to screw up the game day experience with parking and tailgating.

Auburn's situation sounds horrible.

That's why I'm thankful for A&M's leaders and admin. They are very tailgate friendly and accomodate donors with parking spots close to Kyle (relatively speaking compared to others).

They are planting more trees on WC to provide tailgaters shade, and they have an ice truck going around at all times with extra ice. They are very lax on grilling/drinking rules and want it to be a party.

As long as they make the pre and post game as easy and fun as possible, I'll continue to shell out the $$$ for season tickets regardless of record.

If they pulled an Auburn, I'd probably stay at home or hit the bar.

I love college football. But it's a broken economic model. All of these conference realignment changes are being made based upon a current model. The unknown unknown will blow this all up, IMO. And we'll start over when the dust clears.

There are so many college games on TV nowadays. There are tons of channels that show games. People are obviously more conservative about their travel budgets for football weekends.

The NFL has to be worse, tho. NFL Redzone/fantasy football/gambling negates my desire to see live NFL games

Pretty sad bama can't even fill up their stadium against their biggest rival when they know they are going to win and clinch the West. They even had empty seats in 2010. Sad.

Same thing is happening in the NFL, people would rather watch it in HD from the comfort of their homes, than fighting all of the bullshite that comes with attending the game.

LSU was "sold out" all yr too, as were many teams around the country. The point here is that with actual attendance dropping, at some point, when a team enters a down cycle, the season tickets won't get sold, either. LSU is adding approx 3,000 or so seats to TS, but the main reason is that private boxes are being added to one end zone & those "seats" already have a waiting list. Those are tickets for corporations & they are the ones who bail out the quickest once interest dwindles. Yet the tickets remain sold.
