I guess what I'm trying to say is that there is nothing wrong with scoring all sports equally but I would like to see one that scaled the scoring based on the sport. What 'importance' means is really up for debate. Even if a standing was created like the one stated above, everyone would still argue over it and never agree.
But I do think some sports mean more to an Athletic Department than others.

In a perfect world it would be scored based on a weighted scale of how many colleges even participate in that sport. Too many of the AD championships are won by someone like a Stanford who has more sports than anyone. It creates a situation where poor colleges can't even compete.

The Capital One Cup did that (sort of) only it is weird how they determined which sports are worth more than the others.
Scoring System
Group A men's sports include Cross Country, Skiing, Rifle, Water Polo, Indoor Track & Field, Wrestling, Fencing, Swimming & Diving, Ice Hockey, Gymnastics, Volleyball, Tennis, and Golf. Group B men's sports include Soccer, Football (FCS), Football (FBS), Basketball, Lacrosse, Outdoor Track & Field, and Baseball.
Group A women's sports include Field Hockey, Cross Country, Skiing, Rifle, Indoor Track & Field, Swimming & Diving, Ice Hockey, Fencing, Bowling, Gymnastics, Water Polo, Tennis, Golf, Rowing. Group B women's sports include Soccer, Volleyball, Basketball, Lacrosse, Softball, Outdoor Track & Field.
Finish 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10
Group A : 20 12 10 8 6 5 4 3 2 1
Group B : 60 36 30 24 18 15 12 9 6 3
Soccer and Lacrosse should not be in group B. Far too few schools have these sports for them to be awarded the higher points.

The Directors Cup does exactly that. For example, very few teams participate in Men's Volleyball, so finishing #1 results in fewer points than finishing #1 in college baseball.
(Stanford is still #1 in the Director's Cup as of March 23rd)

No they don't. West Virginia got 100 points for rifle and Bama got 100 points for football.

You're right. I hadn't paid much attention the past several years and they changed it beginning 2012-2013.

Program Philosophy
The committee adjusted the philosophy of the program to read as follows - A program that honors institutions maintaining a broad-based program, achieving success in many sports, both men's and women's, in which all sports that the NCAA, NAIA or NJCAA offers a championship, along with Division IA football, and all student-athletes that compete in those sports, are treated equally.
Value by Sport
Based on the adoption of the above philosophy, the committee reinstated all sports in which the NCAA or NAIA offers a championship, along with Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS, formerly I-A) football, to full scoring values. This means that for all sports that meet the above criteria, first place is worth 100 points. Scoring for the Junior/Community Colleges is determined using the NATYCAA Cup standings.

Yea, Stanford and UCLA get the same points for winning a sport like Water Polo that has 25 mostly regional participants as Duke does for winning basketball which has 300+. Silly.
