Bryant had the advantage of pretty much unlimited scholarships and less parity nationally and in his own conference but who is to say that if he had to coach in today's day and age he would not be successful either. You can only judge a coach or player against the time in which the coached or played. They are both great in each one of their eras and if you swapped them up they would still both be great.

No, Bryant is Alabama. Saban is just one of the best coaches.

Something to consider:

If the National Championship was still determined today, like it was in Bryant's era, Saban may only have 1. That's right, ONE.

The LSU NC: USC won the AP
Bama 2009: First championship
Bama 2011: The rematch never happens in Bryant's era. LSU beats someone else in Sugar bowl and wins NC.

Bama 2012: maybe, maybe not. ND could have gone to another bowl in Bryant's era. If they win, they're NC. Whoever beat them could vault to #1 ( see 1966, 1977)

Bama 2016: In Bryant's day, Clemson more than likely plays Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl. Obviously, going by actual results, Clemson wins the NC.

So in truth, had Saban coached in the Bryant era, he only has 1 maybe 2 NC's.

If Bryant coaches in Saban era, he has up to 15 teams that qualify for the playoff.

Since when? With the SEC offices in Birmingham and the mortgage he has on the officials, one would argue the playing fields are not equal.

Kentucky 1950
Texas A&M 1956
Alabama 1961, 62, 64, 65, 66, 71, 72, 73, 74, 75, 77, 78, 79.

All of these teams gain a birth in a 4 team playoff. 10 OR 11 of them in the BCS format play in the Championship Game

This is not the case in 10-15 years, well after Saban has retired. Every kid that's 20 or younger will remember Saban as the best there was and ever will be.

Saban has surpassed Bryant. It'll only grow stronger as the kids today grow into adults.

Saban certainly gets parodied quite a bit by the national media.

Saban either will or will not reach the number to pass the Bear. But it will be fun finding out.

For the younger generation Saban will be more of a name but I don't see Saban surpassing Bryant's legacy just yet.

Bryant played there, and coached there for decades. Saban may well be viewed as the GOAT, but he will never be quite what Bryant is to Alabama.

It's certain to be a hand-wringing experience for a lot of Rantards worrying that he may attempt it.

Winner, winner, chicken dinner. And that is with the usual caveat of I think Arkansas deserves one of the titles Alabama claims considering we went undefeated that year and they lost to Texas.

People talk about the advantages that Bryant had at Alabama but they fail to take into account the many disadvantages he had as well. This will come as a shock to some of you, but SEC football was, back in the day, considered pretty much worthless compared to the Big 10 and the PAC 10... not to mention Notre Dame. Maybe on par with the Big 8 or SWC. Maybe.

Now I know some of you who beat off every day to Saban will start howling that I am disrespecting your coach and start throwing a hissy fit. I am not. Saban is quite clearly the best coach of the modern era.

Comparing coaches from different eras is difficult at best. After all, you go back quite a ways and people would laugh their butts off if you considered a lowly pissant team like Alabama to be even worth mentioning in the same breath with powerhouses like Army, Minnesota, and Harvard.

Times change. Bryant probably has more, not fewer national championships if he coached today. That isn't to say that Saban is a worthless piece of shite, he is the best at what he does right now. That's pretty damn impressive.

Unfair to compare the two. Different eras. Both were dominate in their era and both would have been dominate in the other's era as well. Both are simply great coaches.

For my money, I think Saban may retire as the greatest coach in college football history, but Paul Bryant will always be the greatest coach in Alabama history.

Just the sheer volume from Coach Bryant makes him the GOAT at Bama but man if Saban wins one more it will be tough to keep saying that.
