March 27, 2009 - Calipari, who just completed his ninth season with the Tigers, told a group of reporters at Wilson Air Center today that Memphis is "where I want to coach." "I want to be here," Calipari said today. "This is where I want to coach, and my name will be tied to every job that's open, and our fans I think have gotten used to it."

April 1, 2009 - After over a day of deliberation, John Calipari is headed to Kentucky. The coach sent a text message to ESPN.com's Andy Katz on Tuesday evening saying, "I am accepting the UK job! Go Big Blue, coach Cal."

Sanctions are inevitable, you cheated, like cheating cheaters who cheat. Can't wait till you meet the NCAA coming over the middle.

You think the drama of the NBA is worse than the drama at UK?

I don't think most people realize how much Cal is on the road visiting and watching recruits. The man is on a plane or in a hotel room 365. That's got to take a toll on you eventually, but with all that said, I don't think he leaves UK.

I will say it looks a lot better for the Pels if they make it look like they told Cal no and not the other way around. So unless it's someone like Katz (who has been known to be fed info from Cal himself a lot), I'll take the wait and see approach. Especially coming from a NOLA source.

Even though Anthony and Tyreke are in NOLA, I have no interest in the Pelicans or any other job. I have a great job and I'm happy at UK.

That was quick.

In this case, they have at least some reason to be:

1. The NCAA exists in part because of UK's past history.

2. Cal does have a tendency to jump at just the right moment. And with the new rule about coaches getting hit for responsibility even if they've left the program where violations were committed, the NBA is the only option to escape punishment if anything bad were coming down.

That said, Cal's always been 3 steps ahead of the lawmen and my guess is that by now he's gotten good enough to know how to hide the bodies where the lawmen won't ever find them. I would be surprised if it were any other way so I doubt there's any reason to run other than not being able to replicate the near-perfect season and feeling there's nothing more to accomplish in college.

Most likely, he's just looking for a salary bump but damn it seems insane to me that he didn't sign the extension yet. Hell how much could there be to negotiate?

Looks like the Pels are in damage control.

Word on the street was that Calipari had already declined the Pelicans job. Seems like some PR work by New Orleans.

Brah, Sean Miller is on speed dial as soon as Cal hangs it up in Lexington. Then Greg Marshall is next on the line.

Why would the Pels be in damage control for a story broken by NOLA.com?

Damage control is probably a strong phrase but you have to admit it looks a lot better for them if they're telling a college coach no rather than vice versa.

Maybe they offered him the job and Cal told them no...so they leak it out that Cal is the one approaching them...

Does not matter, Pels are way too cheap to pay Cal and not willing to give up control. Cal is going to demand a ton of cash and total control...No team is willing to do that.

You laugh but your own local rag that the OP listed specifically states that the Pels might not be willing to pay more than $4-5 million for a coach.

I don't think UK would hire Marshall. He's a very good coach but unless he's changed a great deal, his personality clashes with a lot of important people including boosters. The media and face of the program requirements at UK --not to mention the political glad-handing -- would make for a fractious (albeit probably entertaining) marriage, imo.

Stop the presses. Benson isn't cheap. If he thinks a coach is worth it, he'll pay him
