There's nothing wrong with the bowl games in the playoff era.
They just need to regionalize the ButtAss Bowls to a driveable distance to get decent attendance.

Not agreeing or disagreeing, but that has little relevance to attendance. The fans of the schools involved wouldn't likely be attending another bowl game if their school wasn't in one, and whether or not the locals attend isn't likely to be influenced by more or fewer bowl games elsewhere in the country.

That's because DC is only a 4 hour drive from Blacksburg. Most of thier alumni are probably in DC as well. It worked out well for them.

If you only had that many bowl games then it would be seen as a legitimate reward, and the involved fanbases would respond accordingly.

Perhaps, to an extent, but I'm dubious about the suggestion that a large percentage of the fanbase goes, "Oh, it's not a particularly legitimate reward, let's not bother going." Most of them are probably just happy to see their season extended one more game.

There were nine bowl games in 1964 and playing in a bowl was a big deal. Montgomery, Al now has a bowl game.

Location has a lot to do with it. Nobody want to go to Shreveport, Detroit, Boise, Birmingham or Memphis.

Who, sitting at home watching on TV, really cares if the stadiums are more than half empty? TV revenue is what counts. I'm sitting here switching between two games an enjoying watching.
It seems to me that the only concern from a financial standpoint is for universities that have to commit to buying thousands of tickets that they can't sell. But that's their problem to solve, along with the groups that organize the bowls. That will continue to be a problem as long as people can buy cheaper on the secondary market than from the schools. But if the schools want to keep going along, so what if two 6-6 teams go off and play in a bowl? Seems like a good experience for the players that they enjoy.

Bowl game attendance has been bad for years. This year is no different than it was 10-15 years ago.

The number of games doesn't have a whole lot to do with it. All that did was open up bowls for smaller level schools like the MAC, CUSA, Sunbelt, etc. Back in the 80's there were like 18 bowl games and most all involved teams now in the Power 5. The main thing that affects attendance is how the team did. South Carolina and Miami both underachieved. Not many fans from either team is going to travel to watch two 6-6 teams who were supposed to be 10-2 or 9-3. Arkansas traveled well because 6-6 wasn't expected. If they had been say, 10-2 & 9-3 the last two years instead of 4-8 & 3-9 they wouldn't have traveled as well.

Say what you want about the Indy Bowl, but only 9 games have been around longer (1976). Title sponsors have changed for every game many times
