You don't think he evaluated LSUs current and incoming players? Or the recruiting potential at LSU vs fricking Missouri?
It’s hard to be rational when the home school town calls. But anything beyond three years in his evaluation of the opportunity is of very little value.
Very few coordinators last longer than three years. That is certainly true for working for Kelly. They get fired or they move to bigger opportunities. So he’ll likely be part of 1-2 recruiting cycles.

Our win over your best-in-a-decade team was kinda nice.

Checked stats to verify your post:
Mizzou opponent 3rd down percent:
#53 at 38.10% out of 133 teams
By comparision I checked OU and Ted Roof (now gone) was DC but BV really ran it:
#14 at 39.96%
And our new DC was #27 at 33.85% but will step into BVs system
LSU ranked #120 at 44.59%
USC ranked #107 at 43.17%
But holy stinker, I looked at 4th down for Mizzou D and they ranked a whopping #121 of 133 teams. LSU ranked #41.
So its a mixed bag but an upgrade for sure. My guess is he had better players at Mizzou than LSU has on D side of ball. So he’ll have to work the portal hard to make quick improvements.
Challenge with portal is twofold. You can find some great one year rentals but those are harder to find. They can fill immediate holes. At same time you have to recruit better. But if you take portals with 2-3 years left that can tie up your schollys so you have to be careful how many portals you take.
Over time you want your core players to be recruits and supported with some portal rentals. Its not easy finding the perfect balance.
Plus LSU likely has D players that don’t fit new DC system and those will take 2-4 years to move on counting already committed 24 players. Its not easy. OU is in the last stages of this exact scenario getting rid of Grinch players nad bringing in and coaching up players who fit your scheme.
So for LSU, they paid a lot of money and will expect instant fix but it most likely will take up to 3 years. OU had a great offense when BV got here and still do (so same as LSU offense now by comparison). Yet D was a complete overhaul and this year (2nd year) was a big jump over year 1. LSU likely has a better starting point on D players than OU/BV had due to SEC play, so its possible he can turn it around faster. BV had Grinch soft players.
I don’t have a dog in this fight other than we’ll be playing both teams next year. In theory this makes both games a bit easier for us since both teams (Miz/Lsu) will have new DCs. Even though we’ll have a new DC too he is basically runnng BVs D, so won’t be any change there plus will have players who fit system. My guess is LSU will have a new system and its too early to tell for Miz.

Man, LSU fans making Blake Baker out to be Bill Belichick on defense. I loved having Blake call the defense cause he’s young with great energy but his defense definitely wasn’t perfect.
He isn't Belichick and I will be happy if the defense is ranked in the 50's next season.

To make him the highest paid assistant is crazy and it’s obvious we wanted to keep him since we matched the offer
Apparently Mizzou thinks he's a very good football coach as well.

He is a very good coach.
However, he wasn’t that great on the money downs to get off the field. Teams converted on us at will especially in the early parts of the year. Something that is fixable though.

I never would have imagined Mizzou would have melted this hard over a DC

Mizzou had one decent year and their fans have turned into to Alabama fans ??

I think the point that many Mizzou fans are missing is that LSU just had their worst defense in history.
They don't expect to have an elite defense next season, that will give Baker some time.

Missouri 2023 scoring defense vs P5: 20th, 21.5 ppg
LSU 2023 scoring defense vs P5: 87th, 34.0 ppg
Missouri 2023 total defense vs P5: 32nd, 349.1 ypg
LSU 2023 total defense vs P5: 102nd, 454.2 ypg
Missorui 2023 3rd down defense vs P5: 42nd, 36.92% conversion rate
LSU 2023 3rd down defense vs P5: 101st, 47.48% conversion rate
Every metric points to this being a massive upgrade for LSU. Worth it if they win a natty in 2024.

He was getting head coaching offers this season. If he does a good job, he’ll be gone anyways.

No doubt, he is there for 2024, maybe 2025 at best.

These metrics are good but you skipped some. 4th downs were an automatic first down for the other team this year. 3rd down improved late but early part of the year was a massive concern. His defenses play hard and our secondary wasn’t afraid to lay a lick.
When you had a great QB on the other team and our pressure wasn’t getting home, we never adjusted. We just kept going and going and that’s what happens in games like against JD last year. We never made any adjustments and JD destroyed us.

I would like to compare LSU to OU situations and thus why your title aspirations might be a bridge too far for next year:
OU had a Caleb Wiliams who left when BV got here. LSU is also losing their star QB
OU had soft Grinch D in 21 and LSU too had a soft D in 23.
OU got Dillon Gabriel out of portal who did great with Lebby. LSU will meed to match that to maintain a top offense.
BV is a better DC than Baker and he had to use mostly Grinch players in year 1 and still finished 6-7. LSU will have the same problem with Baker using existing players. Granted, LSU is likely in a better starting spot than OU was regarding D players, but LSU still has D players that were brought in by old DC. New DC will have to use old DC players.
BV had a top 10 recruiting class his first year (has in all 3 years counting 24). LSU is recruiting top 10 too so thats a wash. The challenge is still that Baker will have to use players who don’t fit his system. He can’t flip roster in one year. Even year 2 will take some work.
LSU will still have to replace QB. Its a very similar situation to what OU went through. New QB, new DC and it led to many close losses. The improvements were there but without the right players you can only do so much. One advantage LSU has (in comparison) is same HC where we replaced everything in BV year 1.
What I don’t know is how close or far apart the LSU fired DCs system was to what the new DC Baker wants to run. For OU it was completely different and I assume the same for LSU.
I just can’t see how you think 24 will be a title run year with a new DC and as much as he has to change yet without his players running his system. He can likely improve it thats a given but not to title in his first year.
It will be interesting to watch from the sidelines.
