What you do is THE factor.

Recruiting, leadership, Xs and Os, game management are just a few of the attributes a coach needs. The guy who exhibits the best combination of those generally wins the most games. In the end, it's all about winning games.

But a guy who does more with less can arguably be the better coach.

Surely you're not arguing that it's not an important factor when looking at a coach?

The coach in your example excels in attributes other than recruiting. I would not say he is necessarily the coach I would want at LSU.

2 coaches are available to coach your team and you know this is how it plays out:

Coach A will recruit the #1 class every year but finish 3rd in the conference every year.

Coach B will recruit the worst class in the country every year and finish 5th in the conference every year.

Coach B wins more with less, but coach A wins more. IMO, this is precisely what is playing out with Johnny Jones relative to the other SEC coaches not named Calipari.

It's a decent point that Jones has been ok or even better than average as far as simple numbers in wins and losses at LSU (like he was at North Texas).

However, I think the main criticism is that if you're a fan of pretty much anyone other than Kentucky in the SEC right now, you want your team to get NCAA bids more than not and, more importantly, have a really special season every cycle (SEC title/deep tourney run).

Jones just seemingly had all the stars aligned perfectly for that difference making season and it turned into an absolute train wreck (even though his W-L record still looks fine).

Fair or not that's much more deflating to fans and potentially damaging for the program than simply being a coach overachieved a bit but was really "one recruit away"

However, Alabama did fire Grant for the "one recruit away" mediocrity as well:

Grant
Inherited a team that went 18-14/7-9
Overall Record: 117-85 (.579)
Conference Record: 54-49 (.524)
Postseasons: 3 NIT, 1 NCAA in 5 seasons
