and Joey Jones at South Alabama is paid probably 15 times the average income of an Alabamian and he is COSTING South Alabama money every year. So which is worse?

Tony Romo makes more money than Nick Saban does. nothing is right in this world.

whoever wrote that shite is not intelligent. typical leftist crap.
I'll take it a step further and say Saban makes a ton of money for the CONFERENCE, which trickles down to the other schools as well. He's reached god-like status in the coaching world and I'm glad he is in our league.
It is sad how much his boss makes though. You'd think he was Ivy league.

What a moron this guy is. He is just another super liberal journalist that really just doesn't understand economics.
Saban's real economic value is probably WAY more than 7.5 mil/year. That 7.5 accurately reflects his market value(unless Texas wants to re-up that offer).

You're an idiot. How can you possibly go from displeasure with a $7.5 million salary (which is absurd in absolute terms) to paying everyone "the same"? Wow, you must be an awesome debater. And your comments regarding Obama and socialism are so tired as to barely warrant comment.

What team on the House of Representatives do you play for?

Name a teacher who brings in $40m in profit and is responsible for increasing the student enrollment to over 30k and they should get a raise too.
Most professors at Bama are very grateful for Saban because he is the face of the university around the country and many students become interested in Bama because of the football program and then get sold getting their degree here. Without him they might not have a job.

Alabama should join the Lottery, aren't they about the only state not part of the system. WIth this added tax i mean game, they could pump money into education and not worry about contracts of coaches. Now i do believe the amount spent on sports by school's is out of whack. What is worse than paying saban this amount is the amount school's pay to fire coaches.

Absolutely! Our governor is a worthless racist idiot!
Bham News run by barners.
Also agree with the poster who says you have to take care of your cash cow.
I am a Bama alum, as is my entire family. We like the ROI with Saban.

In terms of percentages of what he brings in, Saban is paid less than Garrick McGee

If you look at the value Saban brings to his organization Saban is underpaid.
Supply and Demand:
There are many more schools willing to pay a good coach than good coaches.

Birmingham News columnist blasts Bama for giving Saban another raise

If he was paid what he's actually worth, he'd be making about $20 million a year at least
Compared to a fortune 500 CEO he is over paid.
Wrong. Almost 30 Fortune 50 CEOs make more than Saban. At the top is the CEO of Apple, with a total compensation package worth $378M. Several others with packages worth 15-30M. If you want to compare CEO compensation, given that Saban is at the top of his profession, that's the yardstick to use.

Hey Jim, what about this?
Obama is a lying socialist bastard, and the majority of the country now agrees with me.

This might be the column that prompted the writing of the slasher piece.

For the 2012-13 football season, the most recent for which financial data is available, Alabama reported football revenue of $89 million, second only to Texas. The $50 million or so in football profit not only supported non-revenue sports like golf and gymnastics, but it also helped Alabama’s athletic department end the year $34 million in the black. While many athletic departments have to take loans from their parent universities just to break even, Alabama’s athletic department sends money the other way. Last year it contributed around $6.5 million to the university to provide for faculty support and non-athletic scholarships. Only Notre Dame and Florida contributed more to academics last year.

true dat. If Alabama athletics suddenly exploded to a BILLION a year in revenue, and say..$150 million a year in true net profit.. shoot, Id say pay Saban $80 Million a year!

I think it's insane how much coaches, entertainers, actors, athletes, and singers get paid.
