The team really just got beaten down by a difficult schedule and a lot of close losses. But we are much better than Cal.

I would generally expect Ole Miss to go out there and be better because it is in the early part of the schedule, and Ole Miss generally plays much better before the schedule and injuries wear them down. I would expect them to come out spittin' nails early on with the NCAA mess as well.

Because their OL and WR will be arse this year and they don't have a QB to elevate those groups.

Alabama's preview is up, their S&P Defense radar gives me fricking heartburn.

I think the bottom 1/3 of the league is much better than it was 3-4 years ago, but the top 1/3 is still pretty meh past Alabama. Auburn, LSU and Georgia seem to have the talent ceiling to maybe make a push into that Top 10 type team group, but as of right now it's basically :

Very Good (Top 10) - Alabama, LSU, Auburn
Good (10-20) - Florida, Texas A&M, Georgia
Above Average (20-30) - Tennessee, Ole Miss, Mississippi State
Average (30-50) - Ole Miss, Arkansas, Missouri, Kentucky, Mississippi State, South Carolina
Below Average (51-65) : Vanderbilt

No terrible teams and lots of competitive 5-7 win teams.

I think this is a good example of why both Butch and Kevin probably have more pressure than the other coaches in both those groups.

Again, you have to remember that this can't quantify the effects of all the NCAA nonsense (or even Freeze being gone).

100% agree. However, finishing in that 20-30 range in this league means you go 7-5 or 8-4 usually. Probably not gonna work for Sumlin again.

Which there is no excuse for considering the talent both those teams have compared to the ones below them

Crap we give up a lot of 20+ yard passes per game.

I think it's relative. Take A&M for example, they have a lot of talent. But realistically they have three or four games on the schedule where they won't have as much talent as their opponent (Bama, LSU, Auburn, Florida).

Also, in looking at their schedule, A&M only goes on the road once in 10 weeks in the middle of their season. That's pretty crazy

He actually pointed that out in the preview. The anomaly was a byproduct of beating teams by a shite-ton and forcing them into throwing almost every play:

quote:

The Crimson Tide were good at virtually everything — first in Rushing S&P+, second in Passing S&P+, first in Standard Downs S&P+, first in Passing Downs S&P+ — but led good teams by so much, so frequently, that they gave up a big pass play here and there. Part of their problem in the “20-yard passes per game” average is the sheer number of passes they faced against offenses that knew how to throw the ball.

Comes with the territory of being up multiple scores with more than half the game left. Teams are going to sling it as much as they can. I'd be if you looked at 20-yard pass completions per drop back (or pass attempt or whatever) it would be towards the top in the country.

Until we see what LSUs' passing looks like I would not call them a top 10 team.

I think Canada helps spread it around this year and we finally get to see how talented our (young and inexperienced) wide receivers are. Not top 10 in the end necessarily, but I certainly anticipate LSU to generate some excitement on offense.

Or maybe I'm just being hopeful again
