I'm happy on the surface too. Baseball coaching hires are no where as predictable as football coaches. Mitch Gaspard fit many of the criteria the OP is screaming we should have been after, with previous head coaching experience to boot. A guy like Goff that seemingly worked some wonders in atrocious situations he inherited is more along the lines of what we needed. Considering the limitations set by the 11.7 rule. And no academia help to combat lottery states (at least currently).

I mean - I'm not arguing Battle did a great job, here. I've been pretty underwhelmed by Battle's management of coaches and hiring processes, but I think in the end he has done pretty well and avoided disasters. People who cover college baseball for a living seem to think Goff has a bright future, but it seems like some of our other targets were a bit more established. Who knows.

Either way - it was time to move on from Gaspard. Gaspard's previous head coaching experience was taking over an already well established Northwestern State program and running it into mediocrity. Goff's resume is the exact opposite.

Gaspard took over a program whose previous 11 years were managed by John Cohen, Dave Van Horn and Jim Wells. Their worst record from 1993 - 2001 (pre-Gaspard) was 30-26/14-13. They won 34+ games every year but 1. Gaspard's last 2 seasons they went 58-56 (30-29).

We should have seen the writing on the wall.

Jim Wells made sure his boy got the job when he retired. Simple as that.

Players parents seem to be happy with the hire, and they would know better than some hack on whether its a good hire or not.

look on the bright side- things could be worse. Kinda like UGA, who has a total bum as a coach and everyone can see it other than the AD. I literally don't know anything about goff other than he came from LT but I'd take him right now over stricklin. No questions asked.

Yup, same crap Skip did with Smoke. Set LSU back! I am really disappointed in the Goff hire to be honest. Y'all could and should have done better than that if Alabama baseball wants to get back to what it was under Wells. Truly sad that an AD would allow the softball team to outshine the baseball team for years now.

With all that being said hell Goff could end up being a great hire. When it comes to baseball you just don't know.

Well, the ones I talked to are parents of kids that just finished their career, so they have no reason to kiss up to the new coach.

Hahaha yea - "WTF this guy sucks" is probably not the best way to start a relationship with your kids new coach.

Perhaps, but Wells pre-Alabama resume wasn't all that much different than Goff's.

Hiring a guy from a mid-major, in any sport, is always a big of a crapshoot.

The real question is do you want Battle to hire the next football coach. You can whiff on other sports.

I don't think he'll be AD long enough to do so.

After seeing how Battle handled the basketball and baseball searches, goodness I can't imagine him doing football.

Now this I agree with.

I think Avery Johnson will be fine, and I "hope" Goff will as well. But I damn sure don't want Battle testing the waters when Coach Saban retires.

How long do you give Battle then? I can't imagine that Saban will still be coaching in 5 years.

People dont know this but Battle's official title is still interim AD. Bama is loyal to its subjects. battle is one of ours and he has something to put on his legacy. we havent hired an AD yet.

The next AD will be Ozzie Newsome. I can tell you that with 100 percent confidence. ozzie is so loyal. Just finishing out his contract with the Modell family.
