How do you screw up that position at a place like Alabama where the football program's net income alone could buy the city of Birmingham? I'm not gonna judge Avery because that would just be unfair. But I will judge Bill Battle's intentions. It's as if Alabama is his metaphorical main squeeze, but he has some other side hoe somewhere getting all his attention.

I don't know. I guess I'm just spoiled by the fact that the GOAT Mal Moore made the greatest coaching hire of the last century (outside John Wooden, PBB, and whoever has coached Arkansas' track teams).

What exactly has he screwed up? Saban is still our football coach. He's hired a basketball coach for both the men and women.

Fact.

I remember the hatred spewed his way when Rich Rodriguez announced he was staying at WVU.

People hated Mal Moore until he hired Nick Saban.

Avery might be a dumb signing (considering how long/how much you're paying him for having never been a college coach before), but once Saban retires, Battle's career will be judged solely on who he hires

that's gotta be a shite ton of pressure though

He also hired Dennis Franchione, Mike Price, Mike Shula and Anthony Grant. People forget how many Alabama fans were calling for his resignation after he seemingly botched the Rich Rodriguez negotiations. He was less popular than Bob Bockrath ever was at that point in time.

Still makes me wonder how Dennis Franchione would've done if he hadn't bolted after a couple of years.

Well your boy Mal let the little worm bolt. Mal was a disaster right up until the moment he signed Nick Saban. Bill Battle has done just fine. AJ is a home run hire.

I think true fans and fans who have been around longer than Saban being successful remember it that way too. He was one of the most hated people on sports talk shows up until Saban fell in his lap.

I think he might have done quite well if the Albert Means scandal never happened. That 2002 team was legit. Had he not deliberately blown the Iron Bowl, and had we been eligible for the SEC Championship Game, I think we beat Georgia in a rematch. After losing by 2 to Georgia in T-Town, we went on quite the roll:

42-7 win vs. Ole Miss
34-14 win @ Tennessee
30-8 win @ Vanderbilt
28-14 win vs. Mississippi State
31-0 win @ LSU

Exactly what has he screwed up?

Coach Avery has yet to coach a full season let alone a single game so exactly how is this a bad hire at this point?

Saban is still the football coach, the gymnastics team under a first year coach is going to the National Championships, and the baseball team is getting a new stadium. What have I missed?

ETA - I love it how people bash these guys in these positions like they could do so much better. If you think you can do their job and do it better then by all means, go for it. You can't always get the things you want. Sometimes the things you want aren't what you need and the things you didn't want are the ones that you do need.

Some of you need interest outside of sports played by males who just finished high school.

True.

And I will withhold judgement on the CAJ hire until he at least gets to Tuscaloosa. Everyone on here talking in absolutes about it being an awful hire or a great hire. He made the hire and now let's see how it works out.

I'm very pleased with Battle. But I do want him to make the right decision on Mitch Gaspard after this season.

Most people's resumes wither if you take away their greatest accomplishment. So your argument isn't really an argument.

I don't think he's allowed to shoot him, is he?
