I don't think the SEC is looking to expand past 12 schools, but obviously if the opportunity to pick up Texas and A&M were to arise, would be stupid not to take it. That is pretty much the only addition where we could make MORE money then we already do.

I kinda just did a double take thinking again about the possibility of the SEC adding Texas and Texas A&M.

Stop and think about how ridiculous that would make the SEC.

First, in a money sense: adding Texas and A&M is big and that pretty well lock up most of the state as SEC country.

Second, in a football recruiting sense. The South (from Louisiana to Georgia) obviously has a disproportionate amount of the nation's talent. But this would mean the SEC would have arguably the flagship schools in both Florida and Texas. That's two of the three most talent rich football schools in the country

I still think Notre Dame is making a huge mistake not trying to join the Big Ten. I imagine one of the networks would give us an exclusive deal like the SEC has with CBS. Maybe on NBC and we could keep our deal with ABC. It's not like NBC has any good programming on anyway.

There was an article not that long ago pointing out that Notre Dame is now pretty far behind others in TV money. They make less then every Big 10 and SEC team and close to teams in the Big 12.

Another thought..

For grins, let's say Nebraska, KU and Mizzou go to the Big 10. Texas and A&M to the SEC.

Where does that leave Oklahoma and OSU (who are also likely a package deal)?

I can't stand that dork Jim Delany(B10 Commish)..

But, it would be funny to see their desperation to chase the SEC, and for the Big10/Add1 to become the Big 10 with fourteen schools, yet not change their name again.

It's gonna be a sad day in sports, when the few BCS Conferences cherry-pick the last of the great schools/programs for their own greed by prestige or for media markets..say Kansas or UConn for Hoops..Nebraska for Foots..etc..

And the rest of America will resent the three or four mega-conferences even further for hogging everything.

A day and age, where only three or four conferences win the Football, Basketball, and Baseball titles every year..99+% of the time.

10 is plenty, 12 actually too many..14 is obscene!

As powerhouses in a weak conference?

I would think the Big XII could do something about half the conference defecting to other conferences... then again, if that happened, they might as well take Arkansas and redo the Big Eight. But then there's no Nebraska...

...wait. Why would Nebraska leave?

nebraska might leave because the big 10 share of profits would be better for them than their share of the big 12 pie

Having said that, I think it's a bit of a long shot

you probably don't realize that BOTH texas and texas A&M were damn close to being in the SEC the last time we expanded. after bobby bowden screwed up FSU entering the two texas schools were invited. they were still the southwest conference and that was really a loser conference. the texas legislature, in yet another display of "blind ego" threatened to take away funding if either school bolted. so arkansas got the nod. south carolina got the nod to make it 12. bobby bowden was bigger than the school he represented. their recent problems was nothing but "justice" in my view. they deserved their agony because they gave bowden the university and his ego drug them through the sewers. the fallout will take a long time to heal and they are stuck with the ACC forever because of his arrongance.

It's my studied opinion that the economics of major college sports are about to be changed dramatically, and not for the better (if by 'better' you mean 'more $$$$$$ for everybody').

The traditional advertiser-driven business model is on the verge of collapse. If that happens, those big TV contracts go the way of the evening newspaper.

Not to mention increased travel costs. Sure, it would make economic sense for the football team in Columbia SC to make the 1073-mile trek to College Station TX, and vise versa, every six years or so - but what about the women's basketball team making that same trip every other year?

Back in 1933, they named it the SOUTHEASTERN Conference for reason.

Is it that much further than Fayetteville to Gainesville or S.C. to Baton Rouge? If football and ad revenues cover the lesser sports than all's well.

Nothing against S.C., but I doubt that would hold up such an alliance. Texas would instantly be the largest TV state, and many of us enjoy watching and listening to the Horns en espanol. Think of the marketing potential!!

The Missouri governor and the higher ups at Mizzou have already expressed an interest in the Big 10.

Actaully, they were good till Griffin went out for the year with injury. Point being, they are playing better. Baylor is good at BBall too like I said. And they bring more, in total, to the table than Iowa State does.

Iowa State gives them access to the state of Iowa. Baylor gives them access to what? The 10th biggest market in Texas? Baylor getting dropped in favor of Houston or TCU makes more sense then dropping Iowa State.

Missouri = StL and KC markets. They will look at Missour before they do Baylor or Iowa State.

The Big Ten should expand. The SEC should not. However, there should be some major shifting in the conferences.

The Big 12 sends Baylor to Conference USA and gets Arkansas.
The SEC sends Vanderbilt to Conference USA and gets Clemson and Georgia Tech.
The ACC gets Syracuse and UConn.
The Pac-10 adds Utah and BYU.

Baylor and Vandy would be going into a league with other private schools like Rice, SMU, Tulane and Tulsa.

The ACC would gain big basketball powers and could split into logical North/South divisions.

The SEC would gain two archrivals of current SEC teams, freeing them up to schedule other non-conference games. Plus Clemson and Tech would compete better in the SEC in basketball and their baseball programs are great.

The Big Ten just needs to add Pitt.

Any conference expansion will be motivated by TV money alone.

If the SEC were to expand and try to kick out one of its founding members(Vandy) I would hope we add somthing, i.e. a new tv market.

We have Atlanta and the Carolina already.

Big Ten is going after Uconn and Mizzou already said they are open to the Big Ten. Big Ten could go after the masterstroke and get Nebraska. If they got these teams, then i may subscribe to the Big Ten Network.

You also have to look at travel restrictions. Far flung leagues don't work.

These expansions wouldn't be for TV exposure. The SEC is the ONE league that dominates TV exposure. Don't underestimate the effects of adding Tech and Clemson for the sports other than football.

Washington versus Arizona?? More than a thousand miles separate the two.

Arizona. Arizona state, Washington all have programs other than football that flourish. Softball, basketball etc... The distance don't affect them than much....

What makes you think Texas versus South Carolina would be much worse??? Anyways, I can bet that USC fans would love the opportunity to see their team play Texas and spend a weekend in Austin.

Think about this too... Metropolitan areas such as Birmingham, Orlando, east tennesse, fayetteville, Columbia could all benefit from the added airport business for fans traveling from Texas.
