BIG 12 Expansion

With Greg Abbott weighing in today to say that Houston needs to be included in any expansion of the BIG 12, I would say there's a good chance the Cougars will get in.
If Houston gets in, I think that increases the likelihood of expansion to 14 teams so that the BIG 12 can expand their footprint which is necessary for television purposes.
I think Houston, BYU, and Cincinnati are the easy additions. All will bring value to the BIG 12 in some form. It's the four team that is a wildcard. My guess is UCF. Getting into Florida, even if its with UCF, seems like a much better scenario than adding Memphis, Tulane, etc.

I'm not sure this belongs here, but I think those would be solid editions to the Big 12.

That's a pretty weak conference.
To make this SEC related, is there anyway the SEC goes after OU before they get locked into some new grant of rights thing with an expanded big 12? Maybe try to go after OU and a school in the east like VT?

Morgantown, Provo, Orlando. No way that will last, having several small budget schools in the conference. Unless they can broker a network deal that doesn't give Texas the lion's share of profit.

I hope so. But if OU were to suddenly bolt for the SEC, it would result in the complete collapse of the BIG 12. No way Texas stays in a league that would then be seemingly about equal with the American. Texas would also bolt to a new league or become independent.

The current OU GOR is worth over $100 million today. So.....no.

Texas would have to suck it up and get rid of the LHN so that they could go to the PAC. Which would be a massive relief to ESPN, I'm sure.

Lots of talk that the current GOR is not fully enforceable. It would be much much less than that after a settlement.

I wouldn't think UCF would ever join the BigWhatever. It wouldn't be a wise move, IMO. There would be very few fans able to travel to places as far flung as West Texas to watch a game. Eventually I think the SEC will have to rearrange their divisions for this very same reason. It makes no sense to have Missouri play the teams in the East on a weekly basis.

Not so fast. ESPN owns 0% of the PAC 12 Network and barely has any Tier 1 PAC content. So they would go from completely owning the Horns (including a contract that says they get first bid on a TV deal if Texas goes independent) to barely having control over the majority of the country's college football by square miles.
If you think ESPN would sign off on that fate to save the couple of million they flush down the LHN toilet every year you are crazy.

I heard on the radio that they may at least give a call to Missouri, which is funny.

This is because Bill Snyder said at Big 12 media days he knows of 2 teams that left the Big 12 that want back. I guess some are speculating one is Mizzou. I think the other one is Colorado.

Nebraska was rumored as the most unhappy.

The Colorado one makes sense to me but not Mizzou

Yeah a lot of people who aren't lawyers talk about a lot of things on forums/social media that ends up just being wishful thinking.
A real experienced lawyer analyzed the Big 12 GOR years ago and his opinion is its simplicity would make it an absolute bitch to defeat in court, or at the very least would make challenging the GOR a massive risk:

College administrations don't like massive risks usually. The GOR was written with that in mind, it is about as solid of a handcuff as you can get in college football.

It would be much much less than that after a settlement.
The only reason for a settlement is if both parties want to settle. If OU leaves the Big 12 its fricked, which means those in the Big 12 without options (Baylor, TCU, KSU, etc.) are also fricked. Why would they want to settle? What is in it for them to giving OU a discount on ruining their conference? Nothing is the answer. They would fight for every dime as punishment.
When A&M was looking to join the SEC, Baylor threatened to sue the SEC for damages even though there wasn't a GOR in place. This threat was strong enough that A&M had to indemnify the SEC to move forward in expansion.
OU simply CANNOT afford to indemnify the SEC against a GOR that might have damages that add up to over $100 million. They are too poor for that.
Therefore any concept of OU in the SEC prior to the end of the Big 12 GOR (or close to the end when its cheaper to buy it out) is a COMPLETE pipe dream.
What will happen is the Big 12 will add teams, those teams will demand a GOR extension as a condition for being added, and Texas plus OU will be stuck at the little kids table that much longer.

1. The government needs to stay the hell out of college football. Their opinion on conference alignment and what not means jack shite.
2. Read Clay travis's article on the Big 12 expansion. There is zero chance they add anyone that doesn't bring in more markets. Houston doesn't bring that so they only get in if the accept jr membership or something along those line where they are getting a much smaller piece of the pie.
3. If they add those 4 teams, they are still the worst of the Power 5, will have the smallest payouts of the Power 5, and still be the only conference that cannot get a conference TV deal because of the longhorn network.

I can't, Californians have been migrating to Colorado in massive numbers for decades. They are a great fit in the PAC:

I can't, their fans and state fit much better with the West Coast.
