This publication lists Alabama with the #2 DL and another (Fox Sports, I believe) has Alabama with the #1 LB corps in the country. I haven't seen a ranking, but Alabama has got to have one of the top 3 secondaries in the nation. If all that's true, how the hell is anybody gonna score of them?

Good point. Nobody wants to entertain this idea but this could very well be Saban's best defense ever.

The STARTERS are rock solid.

Unlike '15 very few of the backups have legit big game SEC defensive snaps. The two deep front seven last year basically all had big time quality experience going in.

bama returned the two deep along the Dline and about six LBs that saw regular PT on "D". That's not the case this year.

Starting secondary is set. Who are the nickle and dime backs and other backups in the secondary?

The Gainesville Sun had an article this morning saying Bama could have one of the best defenses in CFB history. That may be a stretch, but they're gonna be really, really good.

With Mo Smith leaving, we'll probably see Anthony Averett more in the nickle package playing outside while Fitzpatrick moves inside. Ronnie Harrison will handle the dime position.

Maurice Smith and Burgess are transferring. I believe Tony Brown is facing an "indefinite" NCAA suspension.

They still have elite level potential, but it looks pretty thin at CB going against teams with 4/5 WRs (Ole Miss, A&M, and potentially Auburn).

With the 2 departures, we'll have 11 4* and 5* DBs in the rotation. With our pass rush, that'll be plenty.

PS- They got more quality DBs than anybody else has quality wide receivers.

How many of those 11 actually have legit SEC DEFENSIVE experience?

Hootie Jones or Thompson should cover Harrison's spot in the dime.

What do you consider "legit SEC DEFENSIVE experience" to be?..my definition would be 1st or 2nd team last year...what's yours?

Just because a guy doesn't have extensive experience doesn't mean they aren't really good football players. I think Nick Saban has an excellent track record of replacing starters with guys just as good or sometimes better the next season.
I know you want to believe that Bama takes a step back on defense this year but as usual we will field the best defense in the league.

Player returning that was in the two deep or regular rotation the year before. That guy should have major SEC experience.

I truly believe bama's "D" will take a step back from what they had on the field in '15.

If you want to go by track record. History is not on their side. The last three saban defenses ('10, '12 and '14) that returned five or fewer starters from the year before saw both the PPG given up and total defense numbers rise.

Still could be best "D" in the SEC just, not as good as last year.

Averett must have been a 3*. That other poster didn't list him with all those 4&5* players.

Hey coach or any other bama fan.

Could you give an educated guess as to the bama defensive two deep headed into the season?

TIA
