What Franklin did at Vandy is 10 times more impressive than spurrier at SC.
There is no way that in the past 19 years of coaching hires, spurrier at SC is the 2nd best.

Saban to LSU has to be #1. Not only did it put LSU on the map, it put Nick Saban on the map. If not for his success at LSU, he would not be Bama's coach today. End of story

Did I say that he shouldn't be included? No.
SC's history is abysmal but don't act like they didnt' have SOME foundation. Prior to spurrier they had yet another hall of fame, big name coach. Hell, if anything give Holtz the credit. To take a team that lost 21 straight games he sure did a hell of a job. They didn't get over the hump like they did with spurrier, but spurrier doesn't take that job if not for what holtz did. They turned into a 7-8ish win a year team under him and beat Ohio State twice in new years day bowls. Not to mention, as it relates to the topic of this discussion, SC has some pretty stout HS talent.
Vandy, on the other hand, has the same shitty history as SC but didn't have a foundation like spurrier came into. Franklin took one of the worst historical teams in football and knocked off a few of the SEC big boys. He also recruited fairly well at Vandy, which has never happened. There are so many "firsts" that he did at vandy it's remarkable. All this with an SEC powerhouse in the same state and not much HS talent.
I'm not saying Spurrier to SC is a bad hire or anything, I'm just saying it's in no way the 2nd best hire of the last 2 decades.

Franklin did a good job but was only there for 3 seasons and only had a winning conf record once.

Spurrier has won 2 COYs at USC and this is the glory days of USC football right now.
When Spurrier wins 9 games this season, he wlil have more wins at USC than the last three coaches combines...and in 6 fewer seasons.

pretty much this. before him, they were a perennial 8-9 win team that had never done anything of true importance.

He would have gotten you a lot more had you not fired him so quickly.
He was the reason Tenn was who they were in the 90s and he is the reason Duke is who they are today.
OM set themselves back 5 years when they fired him.

Seeing as he was literally the worst recruiter in the SEC (Was also out recruited by fricking Memphis) and possibly our history, no he wouldn't have.

If you're just comparing him to his predecessors, Franklin stacks up just as well. Spurrier has won a ton of games obviously, but has only 1 division title to show for it.
Franklin took over a 2-10 vandy team and went 6-7 with a win over ole miss. For vandy, that's a big win. Then went 9-4 with wins over Missouri, auburn, Tennessee, and NC State in a bowl game. Went 9-4 again with wins over UGA, UF, UT, and a bowl game. That's like the vandy equivalent of a BCS win. And like I said, he did that from scratch. Spurrier came into a good situation.
