As an institution of higher learning that surpasses it's rep/rank as a athletc program.

There is definitely a stigma associated with the two Alabama schools. FLORIDA is very highly regarded as is UGA.

I had a lengthy conversation with my head of HR and he had an interesting take on this question.

Vandy is the only school in the SEC w/ an impressive reputation for general academics.

Most of the SEC schools are known as decent state schools. Fla, UGA, and A&M are probably the best of these, but they aren't blowing anyone away on general academics. Some schools have particularly well known majors (A&M engineering), but on the whole, Vandy is the one and only that professionals would generally take notice of.

That was very close to his take. He had nice things to say about UT.

I've seen quite a few people that suck at their job, and all they want to talk about is the great reputation of the school they graduated from 20 years prior. Blah, blah, blah. You can get a great education at any SEC school and have a great career, if you WANT to.

I couldn't tell you the better of Oregon or Washington State just like most people outside the South wouldn't know the better of Georgia or Tennessee. Aside from Vandy, you're all more recognizable for being on sports bar TVs 10-12x a year than anything you've accomplished academically imho.

Vandy, A&M, UF, and UGA are usually considered the top 4 with UGA probably the 4th of the four.

Well, according to the US News rankings (which I don't actually put too much stock in), UGA is tied for 62 and A&M is tied for 68. Not much variance. A&M also has AAU status, UGA does not. UGA is a good school, but to "lol" b/c UGA is significantly better that A&M deserves an "lol."
