He’s not worried about it per se he’s openly said if he could do it again he would have stayed at LSU and that’s part of the reason why. It doesn’t change anything so not sure why you’d be triggered by that

I'm sure he wishes he was back in Baton Rouge.

You can tell how triggered I am by how many sentences I've posted in this thread.

I just recently (finally) read my Dad's copy of Coach Bryant's autobiography, co -written by SI's John Underwood. Some hilarious stuff, the anecdote about a night out with Sinatra in NY is one of my favorites. A good summertime read, if you have not already read it (jmho).

And maybe coach Bryant's closest friend in the media, Alf Van Hoose (Legends are not Common).

No need to use the expression shock-jocks these days. They've all adopted the moniker.

Oh my gosh, is that the one from the '70s (or a reissue of it)?

I had forgotten all about that, but certainly owned it way back when.

Great memories.

Love him, hate him or indifferent he is and was a legend and too few like him in any aspect of life today. Lots of things have been said and written which would have shown a lesser man in a different light but the good outdistances the bad by a damned sight and at the end of the day that is all any human, flawed as we all are, ask for.

Wonderful anecdote about Coach Bryant, but I'd also like to draw attention to how well this is actually put together.

I miss the days of true beat writers and don't think we'll ever get back there, which is a shame, especially for the younger generations of fans who never got to hear these long-form stories about the (very) real people we love to follow from a distance.

Did a little research in Rick Cleveland. He is a gem all too rare in the world today himself. Those kinds of sportswriters simply do not exist today
The Sunday musings of Cecil Hurt and Clyde Bolton have given way to shock-jocks and sound clips.

But that right there is a beautifully written piece.

You ain't kidding...what we used to take for granted in a daily newspaper is so rare in the world today that it passes for literature.

That time when Bryant had to get into it with Mike the Tiger's handler

quote:

Mike III was introduced on the first home game of the 1958 football season, which also happened to be the first championship season for the football team as they beat Clemson 7-0.

Mike III spent 18 years as the University’s mascot from 1958-76 and died of pneumonia after the only losing season of his lifetime. TAF said Mike III is the only tiger mascot known to have growled on command. Joel Samuels, Mike III’s caretaker from 1965-67, used this to his advantage one gameday.

Samuels was able to get Mike III to growl by saying “Get ‘em Mike.” TAF said during one LSU-Alabama game, Alabama’s players were crowded around Mike III’s cage. Samuels quietly gave Mike III the signal, and he scared the players so badly that Alabama coach Bear Bryant gave Samuels a stern talking-to.

Bryant was 3-0 against Neyland's Vols as a player and 16-7-2 as a head coach of the Tide. I'd say he did aight.

I had a car wreck at age 16 leaving me paraplegic and confined to a wheelchair (hence Tideroller). It happened right before the 1971 season, I had to con the nurses into letting me listen to the late kick from LA when he unveiled the wishbone against USC. Later that season I received a Manilla envelope with signed pix of all the players and one of Coach saying best wishes to me. To this day I don't know how he knew about me but he was the best IMO no matter what detractors say.
