Actually there's really nothing French about Baton Rouge past the name. It's a northern Louisiana town stuck in south Louisiana.

This is the truth. Baton Rouge has more of a WASP history than a Cajun or French one.

Not the same after Katrina.

Agreed, in many ways it's better, in many ways worse.

Since Katrina, Crime is up and traffic is worse, but so much of the city has improved. Sherwood is turning around, Bon Carre came to be, downtown has been revitalized, Capitol Heights has been gentrified, mid city has been gentrified, town center was built, Perkins Rowe, ect.

2005-2008 were very dark years in Baton Rouge, but the revitalization really picked up speed in 2010 and just keeps accelerating.

What was really ruined by Katrina was Ascension Parish.

Baton Rouge is a country town with a crime problem

Most of the crime is on the north side of town fwiw. Know quite a few folks who've moved from north to south BR over the past decade for that very reason.

Biggest issue with BR is traffic and lack of things to do.

Wish we had a damn mountain or two....something.

But it's home and there are definitely much worse places to live & raise a family.

Another positive:
There is always the eye candy in the businesses/restaurants/bars close to campus.

The suburbs are just fine

and have better public schools.

For someone coming to Louisiana from out of state, NO public schools are good save for one in each major city, usually some type of magnet school. In Baton Rouge, it's BRH.

Don't think for a minute that because some school out in the suburbs of Louisiana is better than schools in the cities means that it's a 'good' school. They're almost all crap because the citizens in Louisiana simply don't want to pay for public schools.

Hell, there's a small community outside of BR (Walker maybe?) that just voted themselves out of a fire department. The tax renewal came up for a vote, and everyone just saw "TAX" and voted, "NO". Now the idiots will have to pay far more in homeowners insurance rate increases than they would have for the tax, but hey, at least it's going to a private company and not the evil government, right?

There's a community outside of Lafayette that keeps voting not to join the local municipality because they don't want to pay for 1.) the city tax - even though there is NO city tax, and 2.) they don't want to pay for the city to connect them to the municipal water an sewerage services - even though the wells they get their water from are basically taking it from the coulee that their sewer plant discharges too - AND, the connection fees would be recouped in two years through insurance savings being in the municipalities fire and police districts.

I've never seen people more willing to cut their noses off to spite their faces than the residents of Louisiana suburbs.

Honestly, there aren't too many places in BR I'd be comfortable running at night, much less that I'd want my wife running alone.

That should paint a decent picture. Although, there are really nice areas, great food and culture, LSU, etc.

Homes are also overpriced. I'm looking to get out of BR in the next 5 years.

Absolutely. Just pointing out to the OP that there's less chance of trouble on the south side of town. I love BR fwiw.

Hate going back frankly

It's like the worst of America in a small area. Horrid traffic, chain stores everywhere and just a general everyone hates being there feel to ME.

JMHO and yes it's my hometown and shite but I despise being anywhere near it

I was born in Baton Rouge and the family left when I was 6. I went back to work for 3 1/2 years as an adult......and I can agree with every word the quoted poster said. It's a nice place to be FROM.

ETA

This is the city/state that voted Edwin Edwards into the governorship several times. Even after being under Federal indictment fr corruption. Think about that.

I've never understood why people think of mountains as 'something to do', as if you don't have mountains, you don't have anything to do. WTF?

Hunting, fishing - fresh/salt/deep water, skiing/recreational boating/sailing/canoeing, camping, bicycling, festivals galore, music, food, debauchery, horse racing/horseback riding, historical tours... And while there are no outstanding beaches in Louisiana (aside from Holly Beach ) the Alabama/Florida beaches are not that far away.

And the main thing Baton Rouge has that no other city has:

LSU football Saturdays in the Fall (And hell, throw in LSU Baseball in the Spring).

It depends on what areas of the city as to how good it is. Pretty much all of the suburbs, such as Prarieville, Denham Springs, and others are good. The schools in the city, aside from the private schools, are really bad, but the schools in the suburbs are fairly strong. The city itself isn't that big, but it does have both enough to do there without having too many people. Traffic, though, is very bad. Overall, the city is fairly good, excluding a few areas, although I'm a bit biased since I've lived here my whole life. It's not the best place ever, but it's certainly not bad.
