Jeezus Ron, you act as if the guy is trying to get a Nobel prize.

Hi SongofSouth, I like your work. I run an advanced college basketball stat website at www.cbbsheets.com and I don't have position specific "rating stats" like your point guard score yet, but I do have Wins Above Replacement which is I guess what you would call a "one size fits all" stat for every player to determine value.
In that stat, I use national expected values.
I think your formula for point guard rating is a good one, but I would tweak it a little bit.
I would calculate the expected values of assists, steals, turnovers, made field goals, missed field goals, and drawn fouls. I do think drawing fouls is important in a point guard, who can get to the line.
After calculating that, then add the expected value of a possession(right now its .9931 points) and multiply that on possessions he is not involved in.
Then divide it by the number of possessions he has played in.
With that you have a tempo free "score" that shows how many points per possession he is worth when it comes to point guard related stats.

Steals should not be weighed as heavily as assists imo.
You are correct
Because an assist contributes directly to 2 or 3 points, it's worth more than a steal because a steal is worth the expected value of an opponent's possession(.9931) and the expected value of a possession(.9931) combined is slightly less than 2 which is less than the actual value of an assist (2.3)

quote:Assists demonstrate a player's passing ability far more effectively than steals demonstrate a player's defensive ability.
Why?
You won't find a non-biased basketball expert saying that Hickey is a better defender than Wilbekin, but according to this stat, he's over twice the defender Wilbekin is.

Pure Point Rating developed by Hollinger ALREADY EXISTS SoS formula is flawed, although I applaud his attempt.
Which is a derivative of Dean Oliver's offensive rating
