The light load makes you think that Saban knew he was likely looking to move on at the end of the year.

Or he was being strategically held back because of his ties to the Miami situation.

I know he's supposedly 'in the clear' with the NCAA but many stories imply that's only because he was willing to talk. He's also the only Alabama assistant that didn't get a raise after the 2011 championship - Saban straight out said that was because of his role in Miami's mess.

He did a good job, but there's too much baggage. I'm not sad to see him moving on.

Was this the guy named in the Miami scandal

Apparently he said he couldn't spill the beans while he was still coaching at Alabama

Lotta coincidence there. Good luck to him in his new NFL gig. I feel secure in knowing Coach will bring in another Oline coach that will get the job done just like our last two.

I love how Bama fans think they will not or somehow cannot sink back to mediocrity. Can't wait.

I posted it in another thread, but I'll just add it here. In the 24 years between Bryant and Saban, Alabama:

Finished the season ranked 14 times, with 7 of those being top 10 rankings.
Won 10 or more games 9 times.
Went to 18 bowl games and was bowl eligible in 20 of the 24 years.
Won 3 SEC titles, 5 SEC West titles (in 15 years of division play) and had the best record in a 6th but was ineligible.
Won an undisputed national championship.

Even if you take out Stalling's 7 season run, Alabama won 2 SEC titles (ineligible but best record for a 3rd) and was bowl eligible in 13 of the 17 years.

With only a few exceptions, most of college football and most certainly Ole Miss would give their left nut to be that mediocre.

Pendry still coaches at Alabama in an "unofficial" capacity, and the kids are still petrified of him.

Went on probation for major violations-stopped just short of lack of institutional control per the NCAA COI-twice during that same timespan, during which time you won one of your SEC Titles.

I think up until a few years ago, there were 20-something year old Bama Fans that had not breathed a day in their lives without your program being on probation for NCAA violations.

But hey, you've got the pelts on the wall. Anything anyone says to you right now can just be chalked up to sour grapes.

But its happened. Its the truth. Can't deny it.

Not denying one bit of it. The point of my post was to show the Ole Miss poster that at it's lowest point since end of the Korean War, Alabama still was usually better than mediocre.

I think the stretch was 12 years. I'm not certain, but it certainly wasn't 20 something.

The probations are all Bama's own fault, no doubt.

1) Langham probation - he signed with an agent (on a napkin) after the 92 championship. Decided to come back. Could have been worked around and NCAA was willing to work with Bama on it, but Stallings kicked an investigator out of his office.

2) Albert Means - this mistake was coming as soon as DuBose was hired and tried to turn a blind eye to everything. Rogue boosters who under normal circumstances can be reigned in and shown how to live in the gray areas were left to do there own thing. Logan Young tried to show up his UT booster buddies. It's funny that so many teams were involved in that and only one got punished. It is what it is, though. If Bama boosters weren't involved in first place then someone else would have been punished. Bama's own fault.

3) Text Book "scandal". That offered zero competitive advantage and it convinced zero prospects to come to Bama. However, it was a violation during a probationary period (a SELF reported violation). The probation was extended as a result.

Long post summed up: The only of those things that I am embarrased/ashamed of is the Albert Means deal. However, when rival fans/coaches could say "Bama's been on probation since you were in 1st grade" it was unpleasant.

ETA: glad those days are behind us and we have considerably better leadership in place. not saying Bama is perfect, just much less wreckless than before.

And I think it's a testament to how powerful the Alabama brand is that, despite being on probation since 1995, we've had as much success as we have had. Just another reason as to why no one in the SEC can touch us: even when we're on probation we still dominate.

Maybe Saban thinks enough of Will Friend to bring him home, & let Pendry teach him the techniques!
