It's got some smoke to it. All three sites from both teams are not denying it (On3, 247, Rivals).

T-Rob was heavily involved in play calling this year. Saban hired the old guy to be his DC but he couldn't get the play calls in quick enough for HUNH offenses. They worked that out with Saban and T-Rob helping. But, very apparent T-Rob was not Saban's choice to replace Steele. Georgia moved to give him the Co-DC title with Muschamp stepping back and he took it. Kirby absolutely orchestrated for that news to break when it did. Been in the works well in advance. Bama, obviously caught with their pants down, now has to either suffer roster loss or give him the DC job. There is some rumor that it will also be a CO-DC job with Durkin coming in as the other DC.

Bottom line is this though, the real DC does the play calling. T-rob won't be doing that at UGA. If Bama is bringing someone else in to give them that title, I would assume that person is calling the plays since they didn't want T-Rob doing it a few days ago.

We'll see. Win, win for T-Rob. Gonna get a significant salary bump either way.

T-Rob formally accepted the position at Georgia on January 13th.

LINK

So if DeBoer interviewed him on January 14th as the sites say, without Georgia's permission, Alabama might just be looking at an NCAA issue.

Wait, so people actually think Kirby was playing 4D chess by hiring TRob as Co-DC just to force Bama to rehire him as full DC? Wow..

No. That's not what was said. I'm sure Kirby's preference would be to keep him.

But Will wanted to step back after 2021 and Kirby talked him into two more years. They were already looking at him when it became apparent Saban wasn't gonna promote him to that role. He'd already served in that role with Will.

But it's a bad look,if you knew you needed him, to let another school hire him and then lure him back. It makes it harder for you to get him back, so why do that? It makes you look like someone took something from you when you were looking the other way. And as I've said, Bama seems to be trying to decide is it worth holding the roster together by giving a guy a job you wouldn't have given him if roster management wasn't a part of it.

Georgia will have a long list of safety coaches if he doesn't come that won't cost what he does to choose from.

If you don't think Kirby is thinking about optics of what he's doing ask UF fans about recruiting when Mullen was there. It was a clinic.

Or what’s more likely is he just needed a little time to actually interview the guy and do his own due diligence? He just met the dude for a couple of minutes for the first time Friday.

That would be caught with your pants down. And again, DeBoer would be giving a guy a job Saban wasn't willing to give him. Why is that?

Logically, who do you think would have a better idea if T-Rob can do the DC job at Bama?

once upon a time, Saban didnt have SEC ties.

but he was a hell of a recruiter before he came south. The same for Meyer. As great a year as Washington was having, DeBoer's class ranked 36th.

How so? They literally met for the first time ever when he arrived at the facility. I don’t care if Saban himself said hire the guy, if it’s your show now you dot your i’s and cross you t’s.

Now I do believe this is a roster salvaging hire just as much as a DC position hire. So I’m not saying that it’s not. But the arguments that it should have been done immediately after arriving is dumb.

I’ll start by saying I don’t know if T. Rob is up to the job or not. Not trying to argue that either way. BUT to answer your question above, if Saban knew he was retiring, why would he promote someone to DC, just to have the new coach have to remake that decision a few days later?

Saban could have made him the DC in 2022 instead of bringing in Steele.
