She'd be better off getting a room at Bryce. Helluva lot safer.

The original Dreamland tastes great and is a "cultural" experience. Essentially it is a complete dump, pretty far from campus, in the middle of a dump. But that is how true BBQ is supposed to be. If you don't mind that element and won't judge the entire town/campus on your experience there, I recommend it. If you are visiting town hoping for a reason to hate Alabama/Tuscaloosa even more so your daughter won't go there, don't go to Dreamland.

where's the famous BBQ joint (dreamland I think)?

On Martin Luther King Blvd. You can't miss it.

Be sure to wear all white. Also, throw a pillow case over your head in order to fit in (Bama people are really weird... it's a cultural thing).

The original Dreamland is technically on 15th Avenue off of Jug Factory Road south of town and south of the interstate. Give it a shot, plus I'd also recommend some downtown restaurants like 5 and Chucks Fish and Tin Top.
For BBQ, I'd also recommend Jim and Nicks in addition to those already mentioned.

Wings U
Now called Bob's Victory Grille.

As has been mentioned before by others in the thread, Archibald's is the place to go for BBQ. The original location is literally a shack in Northport, but the two locations called Archibald and Woodrow's that are run by the grandchildren are a bit bigger.

Cypress Inn and Chucks are pretty good. Unfortunately Cypress Inn recently underwent a menu changed where they replaced most of their dishes containing crab meat with shrimp which really turned me of of them. Many people suggest Five, but I don't really get it believing it is overpriced and overrated. If you have eclectic and adventurous tastes, Epiphany Cafe is very good although they only serve dinner. Epiphany also has the best cocktail menu I have seen in quite some time.

If you wanted wings, I think Buffalo Phil's is probably your safest bet. It is right next to campus on the Strip and is certainly a local favorite. For burgers, I've heard that The Avenue Pub is pretty good, but I haven't tried it myself. Mugshots is definitely a good burger joint though.

Here's a lesson on the dangers of franchising. My buddies and I went into the Huntsville Dreamland a few years ago. We knew we were in trouble as soon as we walked in and saw an 18 year old white boy manning the pit. Kid walks off to go to the bathroom, next thing you know flames are shooting up through the slabs of ribs on the grill. Kid comes back, boss is fussing, they're having to throw out slabs of ribs. I guess they figured what was headed to our table wasn't bad enough to throw away, but the outside of the rib meat was overdone. People had no fricking clue about how to cook barbecue.

That having been said, my take on Dreamland in Tuscaloosa and Birmingham is this: The quality of the ribs they use is outstanding. I don't really care for their sauce, though. Of all the barbecue places in Birmingham and Tuscaloosa, Dreamland is way down on my list.

And Jim and Nicks is actually a franchise that does well. The ones here in Murfreesboro and Smyrna are always good.

It is pretty widely known that the original Dreamland is by far the best and the rest are average and living off the name.
