For everyone else in the SEC? Probably.

Outside of maybe recruiting, I don't see where he'd be that good of a hire for a college program. He's never coached college and he obviously had issues on the pro level.

I just feel like Bama could get someone better suited for the college game and building something at Bama.

Like I said, if AJ is so highly thought of in the NBA, why doesn't he have a job? Cleveland went out and hired a guy that had been coaching in Tel Aviv.

LeBron is the coach of that team.

My mom is a huge Spurs fan too, so she is pretty pumped about the prospect of getting AJ.

He's a good dude, and I think he'll do well. Glad to see his name popping up again in these coaching searches.

It'd be an interesting dynamic if he lands in the SEC with his son playing for A&M

Look what he did with the Knicks, basically destroyed them and set them back 10 years.

Once again your stupidity shines through.

I wonder if the son of a coach can transfer to the school his father coaches without losing eligibility....

For those saying Avery can't coach...

50, 100 and 150 wins faster than ANY coach in NBA history.

Cuban regrets firing him and they are still great friends.

If you question whether a Black former NBA coach of the year can recruit you're looney. He'd get a lot of guys that wouldn't even think about Bama for bball plus locking down the State.

This would be a grand slam home run for Bama. Johnson is a high character guy with great energy and a winners mentality. He holds all types of records including most assist in a season and in a game in D1 history.. His number has been retired college and pro.. his NBA nick name is Lil General...

Yeah recruiting won't be a problem at all.

No doubt he could probably recruit, but his actual coaching is meh.

Sounds like Alabama has announced a full-scale war against their press conference podiums. Now all of them will have 2 feet cut off the bottoms, instead of just the FB ones....

You don't think he'd transfer? He could be a walkon his first year, or stay a walkon, and only have sit out one year.

I have to agree with you here. He'd very likely be a good recruiter but the college game is so different I don't know how well he'd adjust. Plus, Bama needs a program builder as much as a coach which makes things even harder.

He's a 'name hire' that will make a lot of more casual fans happy but not necessarily the best hire for Bama. I honestly think Bama would be better off with White or Prohm. And Miller would be an absolute steal for them.

If Battle is willing to open the checkbook for Johnson he should do it for college coaches as well. They need a proven college HC, imo even if that HC is an up and comer.

A proven head coach and up and comer don't really belong together. Prohm and White have both been head coaches for what, 4 years? Now while I agree that they could have success at Bama, I think johnson who has experienced good success in the nba could instantly bring in good talent and have quicker success than those guys. Then if/when he left, the program is on a better foundation that could attract better coaches than just up and comers.

Good hire but he won't lock down the state by any means with Pearl and Person at AU.
