But the process of cooking the meat is called barbecuing, right?

Nope, called grilling or smoking. The sauce or the rub make it BBQ. If you put chicken on a grill with no sauce, it's just grilled chicken.
If you put a ham in the smoker, that's not BBQ

And there are most certainly barbecue pits and a grill is often called a barbecue in some regions.

In some regions yes. But I think that in most of the South you will find the term grill used more.

I think we'll just have to agree to disagree on this one.

But how often do you hear "Hey, CSA, wanna come over this Saturday for a grill?" or "I'm having a grill for the game this weekend."? Even when the plans are just burgers (etc.) it's often called a barbecue when cooking outdoors.

Financially speaking...you're an idiot. No state income tax in Texas. Better business tax code...better schools. Better all around...but only in a few cities. I would live in Charleston, SC...but nowhere else in SC.

I would like in like 4-5 places in Texas...starting with Austin.

I say I'm "grilling out" not "barbecuing." If I have to use a noun, I guess I say having a "cookout," but certainly not a "barbecue." Even when I'm literally making barbecue, I tell people to come over because I'm "smoking some pork." If you use the word barbecue, and I show up to no smoked pork, we are not friends anymore. I would be hugely disappointed.

True. Cookout is pretty prevalent. But if I hear "backyard barbecue" I often think of burgers and hot dogs as much, if not more, than I think of actual barbecue. I think it's because real barbecue takes time and I think of a barbecue in this sense as just cooking out and having fun with friends/family.

I agree with this. BBQ is not simple grilling. We just say we've got chicken or steak or burgers on the grill. OR fajitas.

Where did you get that?

Barbecue

quote:

Barbecue (also barbeque, BBQ and barby/barbies) is a cooking method and apparatus. While there is a vast degree of variation and overlap in terminology and method surrounding this form of cooking, the generally accepted difference between barbecue and grilling is in the cooking time and type of heat used: grilling is generally done "hot and fast" over direct heat from low-smoke fuels (with the flame contacting the meat itself), while barbecuing is usually done "low and slow" over indirect heat from high-smoke fuels (with the flame not contacting the meat directly).

quote:

Samuel Johnson's 1756 dictionary gave the following definitions:[4]

"To Barbecue – a term for dressing a whole hog" (attestation to Pope)
"Barbecue – a hog dressed whole"

quote:

In the southern United States, barbecue initially revolved around the cooking of pork.[9] During the 19th century, pigs were a low-maintenance food source as they could be released to forage for themselves in forests and woodlands. When food or meat supplies were low, these semi-wild pigs could then be caught and eaten.[10]

Frickin' aggies.

I don't know why I would expect y'all, of all fan bases, to know this but ... it's not what you BBQ, it's how you BBQ it.

It's a combination of both. Not all beef is barbecue, not all cooling styles/sauces are barbecue, but all barbecue is correctly prepared beef
