In 2000, Mississippi State football beat the brakes off Florida and shut down Rudi Johnson and Auburn to move to the top ten. State had two chances to clinch a spot in the SEC championship game - missing a chip shot FG and eventually losing in OT to Arkansas and then laying an egg against Ole Miss.

That team also lost to LSU and South Carolina. But, how would beating Arkansas have clinched the west for them? They still would have had two losses going into the Ole Miss game, and would still have needed a win over Ole Miss to win the division.

That MSU team is the only team in SEC history to beat both participants in the SEC Championship game.

1993 Auburn, 1997 and 2003 Florida all say hello.

The worm definitely turned for Miss. St. football in 2000 when they were on cruise control vs an average LSU team in Tiger Stadium and leading 31-14! LSU came back strong and won in OT. Miss. St. and Jackie Sherrill never recovered from that setback.

That's the game in which I became convinced that Nick Saban was a tremendous coach.

It was 31-17 in the 4th quarter. A funny story about that game was that a Mississippi sports writer wrote his column about the game in the 4th quarter assuming MSU would win.

He had the whole writeup, leaving blanks for the actual final score and some stats, which he presumably intended to fill in when the game actually ended. The theme of the article was that MSU had positioned itself as the odds-on favorite to win the SEC West. When LSU made the comeback and won, of course he had to write a different column. But the funny part was that somehow the original story, about MSU winning, got posted on the paper's website for a short time before someone noticed and it was replaced by the real one.
