Auburn, would you really be ok if Gus left for Arkansas?

I know we’ve all made our jokes, but it’s another thing entirely to actually have your coach leave you for a team in the same division. A lot of pressure would be upon the AD to make the right hire because Arkansas beating Auburn with Gus would be terrible for the image of your program.

No. But I am also tired of hearing it and every dumb AU fan calling for him to be fired after every mistake.

I would think there comes a time when change is just a good thing. Auburn may be there with Gus, because their fanbase straight up attacks the man after every loss

He's still a good coach

I may be wrong, but Gus would be a terrible hire for Arkansas.
Even if he'd bring along Kevin Steele, Arkansas just isn't going to get the types of recruits Auburn gets.
Further, the only thing that's kept Auburn winning the last few seasons has been the defense.
There are no Davidsons or Browns coming to play for the razorbacks

This. Our fan base has been awful this year.

It is rare that we have a good defense but we had the 10th best defense in the country in 2014 and Mississippi State had one of the best in the conference last year so it can happen. We have a 5* DT that's gone to waste under Morris.

I'm apathetic to it.

In 2017 it was a little different simply because the narrative then would have been messier (successful Auburn coach leaving for smaller program).

At this point I don't think anyone would view it as anything other than Gus activating an ejection seat in favor of a more forgiving job. I think I'd be equal parts excited about the unknown and concerned that we'd given up a safe coach in Gus.

Reality is that I don't think fan feelings should matter much. If Arkansas flirts with Gus and Gus returns the affection, what are we going to do? We don't like him enough to fight for him. If Gus intends to stay at Auburn, he should have enough awareness to realize he's not in a position to negotiate too hard. I realize he has to guard his own interests - but he's got a lot of security already via the buyout.

Why did Arkansas think it was a good idea to hire the SMU coach in the first place?

Guess I am a "dumb AU fan" because I have been DONE with Gus ever since his EPIC choke job against LSU in 2017....I lost my faith in him completely that day....

(Not counting his abysmal record vs UGA, LSU, and AL....also the fact that he doesn't know how to win in hostile environments)

Gus is an 8-4 type coach..period

I would be fine with it. I feel like it’s time for both to move on. Gus refuses to change and the Auburn fan base is tired of seeing his coaching lose games for us

Eh I think most bama fans would breathe a small sigh of relief if he left. He hasn’t had a lot of success against them, but he’s had more than most.

Curious to see who Auburn would go after if Malzahn leaves?

UAB - he has done absolutely incredible work there given they just lost their football program several years ago and he has had to build from the ground up

Yes, even though Gus has had some great success, he hasn’t taken advantage of it. Auburn is a program that has everything needed to be successful at a high level except a coach that can maintain the success. Tubs got lazy, Chizik was out of his element and Gus has been too loyal to his system to evolve his coaching. None of them were considered great coaches before Auburn and none of AUs ex-coaches have had much success after they leave. AU has now sent a message that they will pay a coach a top 5 salary which could be attractive to the top coaches out there.
