Same as if you deleted Steele and inserted Cam

Steele got a lot of shite last year. At least once a game the defense would break down and allow a long touchdown play. And this wasn't just because the offense would struggle, it would happen even when the offense was rolling. Our offensive woes in November just overshadowed the defensive break downs.

sounds like we've just got a more talented defense imho

Then you're a blind idiot

Starting in 2014 Gus and Co. began to emphasize recruiting along the defense more and I believe we are seeing results of that, etc...Steele also seems to have come with a bit of a chip on his shoulder which never hurts. CWM did a great job last year, but Steele seems easier to play for and our guys seem to have bought in better this season as opposed to last season. CWM and CTR are responsible for some of the guys making plays this year via recruiting though.
I like when he talks about how he studied Pete Carroll, not just defensive philosophy, but his player/coach relationship tactics before the season. It shows he was really prepared to make sure this season went well and hopefully beyond.

You missed some decent melts then. Steele was not very highly regarded by the fan base.

Okay great, then you also remember constant whining about the defense giving up big plays etc too right? Oh no? You're actually just trolling? Got it, you're an idiot.

To be fair, what former LSU coach is highly regarded?

Saban
Muschamp
Fischer
Pelini
Wilson
Cooper
Should I continue?

He's exceeded my expectations.
With that being said, a lot of the success has to do with a DL that has talent and depth equivalent to bama's right now. (not sure if any other teams can say that). I'm curious to see how he does next year when Lawson and Monty Adams (two likely 1st rounders) are playing on Sunday.

shite went down hill for LSU after the Bama game last year. I obviously missed the melt by your fans over Steele, my bad.
LSU is happy with Aranda, AU is happy with Steele. So errrbody happy happy happy.

LSU was definitely light on bodies on the DL last season.

Gase as well, the youngest head coach in the NFL.

Wouldn't have seen this coming in a million years. But I'm jaded from lousy Auburn defenses since 2007. Wish we had beaten A&M we would be right in the thick of things, they way we are playing on both sides of the ball.

It's a playoff now, dude. You still are in the thick, imo.

He has been great, but we have tremendous talent on the DL that would probably make me look like an ok DC.
Moreover, I think his style fits REALLY well with what Gus wants to do on O, and the players play really hard for him. That piece is more why I like him. His attacking style on D is a nice compliment to what we do on offense, and is helping to solidify our identity.
I don't necessarily expect us to be amazing every year with him at DC, but I believe in what he is doing.

Like virtually every AU fan on tRant, I was totally underwhelmed by the hire.
Despite that, we all expected modest improvement on that side of the ball this year, simply because we knew we had the talent on paper. What he's done has exceeded our expectations by far.
I'm realistic enough not to think we will play at this level indefinitely - in fact I imagine we'll see some cracks in the armor this Saturday, and I bet Chubb and Co. will hurt our run defense numbers significantly as well. And I won't begin to predict what Kiffin has up his sleeve for us.
But, I'm more than ecstatic about Steele's job performance thus far. We always said if our offense played up to its potential, all we would need is a top 40 type defense. While our opposition lately has probably contributed to our success on both sides of the ball, I feel like we are finally living up to our recruiting hype.
tl;dr: So far, so good.

A tip of the cap should go to Muschamp as well. By the end of last season he had coached out most of the crap that Ellis Johnson left behind and had moved a lot of players around. This defensive resurgence was building last year. Steele has come in and kept most of everything the same outside of some subtle things. 1). We aren't nearly as aggressive as Muschamp was which has limited big plays against us. 2). He and Travis Williams have turned our LBs into a top 3 unit in the SEC

The difference between auburn this year and LSU last year is along the D-line. Auburn has some freaks down there when LSU was really thin in 2015.
