the fact that several teams with UA have gone to the NCAAT
Major conference UA teams:
Auburn
Boston College
Colorado St
Maryland (since 2008)
Northwestern
St John's
South Carolina
South Florida
Temple (2010)
Texas Tech
Utah
Not a lot of UA success.

No, nobody thinks it's the shoes. Basketball recruiting is largely taken place on the AAU circuit. The shoe companies, mostly Nike, run the AAU tournaments and they don't let coaching staffs sponsored by UA or anybody else into those events.

Not a lot of basketball schools listed either.

Auburn should take a serious look at Lennie Acuff up at UA-Huntsville. The guy is a super coach who, I believe would make a helluva SEC coach....actually I hope they don't take that look!

Maryland, Temple and St Johns are either going to the dance, or are serious bubble teams... and as mentioned before, it's not like this is the cream of the college bball crop.
The three programs mentioned above are committed to basketball, and have had success with UA on their sleeves. Auburn having success will have much more to do with who we hire than the clothes we wear.

Maryland, UA's flagship school, has a great recruiting class lined up for next year.
The guys they signed are all UA guys as far as I can tell. Trayvon Reed looked at Auburn early in the year, and the only reason I can tell is from his UA affiliation because he was never coming to Auburn.
There are a few good UA players out there, but Nike owns the AAU circuit.

For some reason Auburn always targets guys with connections to the NC, Duke and UK's of the college basketball world. For that reason I think we hire the only one of those guys early enough into their coaching careers that they would take the Auburn job.
ETA: I want Ben Howland, Larry Eustachy or Michael White in that order.

The UA deal hurt Barbee more than Auburn IMO. Barbee has deep connections with Nike, and had we been a Nike school our recruiting would have been much better.
The next coach the deal may not matter as much, but it doesn't help.

im hearing kermit davis may be interested. guy can coach.
tyndall is a good coach but he could also be billy kennedy at a&m
pearl aint going to auburn
white is a good one. ideally develops at tech a couple more years.
capel
i always liked stans, just dont think he could do that well at auburn. you need a guy who can really coach.
kermit would be a good hire IMO. he was a good bench coach at lsu.

I know all of these guys well.
Nice guy. Good coach, but he only averaged 17 wins a season for his first 9 seasons at Middle Tennessee. I don't know if Auburn has that kind of patience. If hired, the older TAMU guys would probably get a chuckle.
He would love to be back in the SEC, and I think he could get Auburn competitive faster than anyone else, but he will be 60 this year, and you have to wonder how much fire he has left in him.
Larry would be my pick, but I don't see his name mentioned anywhere. He's sorry for partyin'. That's over. Good guy. Knows how to win.

I like this list and my hope is we get a coach that can help us get to a respectable level and beyond.

quote:I know it, and a lot of schools that aspire to be another NC, Duke, or UK seem to think that line of thinking is the only way to do it. There are some superb coaches out there with proven track records...only with lower profile teams. I don't see why a guy like that isn't at least as attractive as a guy with no HC experience, but happens to sit on the bench of a well known basketball power...go figure.
