What is up with the team this year? They've had some close games so far, with much better competition down the road.

Are they good enough for a run? NIT? What are you expecting in Pearl's 2nd year?

Love me some serious hoops talk.

Lost to 10 RPI Colorado at home and MTSU on the road in OT. Blew big leads. Plays #1 RPI Marquette on Saturday. Current RPI rising.

We play Xavier in the 19th. We will have a better idea then, but Coach pearl has us in the right direction.

I don't know anything about their team this year, but I was jealous when they hired Pearl. I assume he'll still get them turned around, but I'm ecstatic with Avery so far.

Preface - I don't know anything about basketball.

But I am a bit disappointed and a bit jealous that it seems like Avery is having a better start to his first year than Pearl is in his second. I understand that it's really hard to recruit the top players in basketball with so many blue bloods reeling in the majority, but I figured with Pearl and some of the best facilities in the country that we would be a top 5 SEC team this year.

Again, I don't know anything about basketball.

Avery has already been beaten by 40 this year so I would hardly say he is doing better. Solid win vs Notre Dame, but we will see how good they really are at the end of the year.

Auburn is pretty bad defensively. They just look like they don't care at times. Kareem Canty is going to win AU a few games that they should lose however. The guy can flat out ball.

And it shows. We are definitely heading in the right direction. The issue is talent. As bad as Bama is off right now on talent we were worse last year. On top of not having many guys that could play we lost almost all of them. So we are left this year with a brand new team essentially. But with that said once they gel and if Purifoy were to get cleared we are a dangerous team. Future is really looking bright though. Have 5*'s in the next two classes, which has never happened at Auburn.

He's also got them playing with an edge that they never had under Grant. Yeah they got waxed by two good teams but they've also won some they would have lost last year.

I'm not saying this to compare him to Pearl or anyone else. But, considering the players we have, Avery is doing a fantastic job so far. I'm not saying Bama has NO talent, but it's a down year in that regard, for sure. Can't wait to see what he can do with a couple of recruiting classes.

Discount Avery at your own peril. He doesn't have the best talent this year but has them headed in the right direction.

No offense but recruiting "top players" to Auburn won't help Auburn basketball. Those guys will be gone after one year to the NBA and you'll still have no bench. Pearl needs to focus on building a solid program with overlooked players.

He is absolutely doing a good job, just don't see how one can say he is doing better than Pearl. Pearl inherited a program that was in much darker times than Alabama could ever think of being in.

It is a matter of perception more than anything. There's absolutely nothing wrong with Auburn's start. It's about what a reasonable fan could have expected.

I guess to use a football analogy, Alabama just won the SEC back to back - a feat not accomplished in over 15 years and is the only team to make the playoffs in their first two years yet McElwain's going to be SEC coach of the year.

The new guy that's making chicken salad out of chicken shait is naturally going to generate more buzz than the guy everyone knows can cook.

Their biggest worry just has to be that someone will hire Pearl away. He will have them in the NCAA Tournament in another year or two.

I think you can. Yeah, we had two big losses on the road in our first four game, but have since had 5 straight wins. We lost our top 3 scorers from last year from a team that didn't have many scorers to begin with. Our best player is a transfer who has to sit this year out. Our starting PG broke his foot before the Clemson game and is out for the year. We just beat Winthrop by 12 with another crucial player out with a "medical condition". If we can beat Oregon, we can finish a tough non-conference schedule with only 2 losses. I just don't think Auburn can equal what we've done.

Their biggest worry is losing to Avery Johnson. Nobody is hiring Pearl away.
