List is shite. Sorry, terms of my contract made me say that. I dunno, I'm OK with the 27 ranking for Bert. I think as he gets his players into the system that will trend upwards but I'll take it.

Or the previous coach carries him.

It can go in the trophy case right next to Kenny Trill's.

I want to see Mullen at a larger school.
For comparison, below are the season records the two years prior to Miles at Oklahoma State & Mullen at Mississippi State. Then their respective record for the first 4 years at those schools
Oklahoma State
1999 5-6 (B Simmons)
2000 3-8 (B Simmons)
2001 4-7 (L Miles)
2002 8-5 (L Miles)
2003 9-4 (L Miles)
2004 7-5 (L Miles)
Mississippi State
2007 7-8 (S Croom)
2008 4-8 (S Croom)
2009 5-7 (D Mullen)
2010 9-4 (D Mullen)
2011 7-6 (D Mullen)
2012 8-5 (D Mullen)
Eta: for shits
LSU
2003 13-1 (N Saban)
2004 9-3 (N Saban)
2005 11-2 (L Miles)
2006 11-2 (L Miles)
2007 12-2 (L Miles)

Changes from last year.. LINK
It seems Athlon lost a lot of love for Spurrier after just one season.
quote:
(1) Nick Saban, Alabama (same)
(9) Gus Malzahn, Auburn (10th)
(11) Steve Spurrier, South Carolina (3rd)
(16) Mark Richt, Georgia (14th)
(17) Gary Pinkel, Mizzou (22nd)
(19) Dan Mullen, Mississippi State (32nd)
(20) Hugh Freeze, Ole Miss (29th)
(24) Les Miles, LSU (17th)
(25) Butch Jones, Tennessee (37th)
(26) Kevin Sumlin, Texas A&M (24th)
(27) Bret Bielema, Arkansas (53rd)
(54) Jim McElwain, Florida (75th)
(73) Mark Stoops, Kentucky (61st)
(107) Derek Mason, Vanderbilt (62nd)

So Gus is the only one to move up after a subpar season. Interesting.

Looking at the previous year, I think the head football coach "ranking" actually appears to be more about how they expect the respective teams to do this year rather than really evaluating coaches.

Athlon - Ranking All 128 College Football Head Coaches for 2015
by jatebe
LINK
quote:Where SEC coaches rank in Athlon’s 128-member list (1) Nick Saban, Alabama (9) Gus Malzahn, Auburn (11) Steve Spurrier, South Carolina (16) Mark Richt, Georgia (17) Gary Pinkel, Mizzou (19) Dan Mullen, Mississippi State (20) Hugh Freeze, Ole Miss (24) Les Miles, LSU
And yet Miles has beaten every SEC Coach ranked ahead of him, and is the only SEC Coach besides Saban to win a NC at his current school, much less play in 2 NC games and 3 SECCGs (winning 2).
He has also played Alabama closer than anyone since 2007, with 7 of the 9 games in doubt til the final minute, and 6 til the final seconds.
I know if was a skiff, but if LSU holds on against Bama in '12 and '14, Miles is ranked in the Top 5 right now, which he should be anyway, or at the very lowest in the Top 8.
But to rank him as the 24th best coach in the country, when he's in the Top 3 in victories in the past decade IN THE COUNTRY, is absolute cow plop...

They had Miles at #20 the year after he lost one game: the National Championship. I guarantee you the SECR would do a much better and fairer job with the list.

Miles has NEVER lost to Spurrier. Miles is 5-1 vs Mullen. Miles is 4-5 vs. Saban. Miles is 2-1 vs Freeze. Miles has beaten Richt for the SEC Title and is even with him.
I suppose actual GAMES and RESULTS don't matter. It's just another bash Miles campaign. When are some of these idiots going to give the man credit?
The only guys ahead of Miles in this ranking who have an NC are Spurrier and that was at UF & Saban.
Richt-NO; Mullen-NO; Freeze-NO. As a matter of fact,
the last 2 have never won an SEC Title or been to Atlanta. It's absolutely ridiculous. Especially since obviously Spurrier is getting credit for what he accomplished at UF years ago and Miles apparently gets no credit for what he has done at LSU. This is absolute crap.

All are about Les Miles is a fricking joke
Auburn goes 8-5, their coach is ranked 9th (after only 3 years of head coaching). LSU goes 8-5 after 4 straight double digit winning seasons, yet their coach is ranked 24th? This is with averaging 10 wins a season over ten years at one school, bringing another school back up after 1 winning season in 12 previous years (Miles gave them 3), winning several division and conference titles in the toughest division in CFB, and winning an NC and going to another. Dan Mullen getting 10 wins at Miss St, Freeze getting 10 wins and being ranked higher is a joke. Richt has had similar recruiting but less success yet he is higher as well? No offense to those coaches, as they are all pretty good IMO, but better than Miles is nonsense. Saban and Richt are the only SEC coaches with winning records against Miles.
That's just the nonsense from the SEC part, most of the rest of the list ahead of him is retarded as well. We lost nearly our whole defense in the 2013 draft then our whole offense in the 2014 draft, something had to give. These people are in for a rude awakening though as we bring back the most starters and experience we've had in years.
Miles shouldn't be listed outside of the top 10 period.

quote:the problem is the same with any "ranking." they almost never list their criteria and on the few occasions when they do, it's a subjective list.
The media does not think too highly of Les as a coach
wins and losses are what count in cfb. if that's the case, miles is second only to saban and maybe meyer and spurrier. that's it. the man has an sec winning percentage only surpassed by legends and he got that coaching in the same division as saban in the most competitive division pretty much ever. oh and btw, he has championships too.

Steven Lassan authored this list. He attended Austin Peay State University. Why should anyone take his lists seriously?
