Auburn Police tracked down Updyke more than a week ago, according to court documents.

If this is the case, why did Auburn wait until the day of the NCAA investigation announcement to make the tree ordeal public?

Maybe because it was the day after we received the samples and tests back from MSU?

Did anyone know that samples were even sent until yesterday?

I would just love to hear him explain why in the world he would do such a thing.
I know his family has to be so embarassed.

I'm sure that he thought he would be viewed as a hero. Why else would he go onto Finebaum and brag about it? Dude's pretty sick.

I can only imagine how his family is feeling. It would be embarassing enough to have your 15 year old kid do something like this, but your 62 your old father/grandfather?

So did AU students really roll the trees when bear died?

I can't find any links proving or disproving this.

No.

Honestly the trees were never rolled until the late 80s, most people thin they were first rolled after the 1989 Iron Bowl. Until then the only thing that was actually TP'd was the light poles and things like that.

As for Bear's death, there was not any type of celebration in Auburn (at least nothing public). If there had been, you can bet their would have been a huge outcry at the time from the local citizens because the older folks living in Auburn at the time were of the genteel southern class. From what I have heard they had no problem taking the students to task in the newspaper op-eds when they felt the students had stepped over any line of good southern behavior, and celebrating anyone's death would not have just crossed but blown way past such a line.

i think you're wrong:

wiki:
quote:

Hanging over the corner are two massive old-growth oak trees, and whenever there is cause for celebration in the Auburn community, the trees are festooned with toilet paper. Also known as "rolling the corner" or "rolling Toomer's," this tradition is said to have begun when Toomer's Drugs had the only telegraph in the city. During away football games, when employees of the local drug store received news of a win, they would throw the ticker tape from the telegraph into the oak trees to signal a win to the public.

Or else wiki is wrong.

From AU itself:
quote:

Most agree that "Rolling Toomer's" originally had nothing to do with the oaks. McAdory Lipscomb, who operated Toomer's Drugstore for more than 30 years, estimates that while the corner has been a popular gathering place for generations, the initial rolling of the corner occurred around 1962. At first, only the power and telephone lines were rolled–not the trees–and only for away-game victories.

As part of urban renewal, the city removed all the power lines and went to underground utilities. With no power lines to roll, the trees took the full brunt of the rolling.

From Trey Johnston whose family owns the bookstore virtually across the street:
quote:

It will make things different. But back in the old days, the trees were not the targets of the rollings. It was the power lines and traffic lights

Ok,I'm just hearing about this.
Has anything come out to say why this guy did this?
Besides being a gump?

When he called Finebaum's show on January 27th, he claimed that when he was living in Texas in the early 80s, a friend from Birmingham sent him a newspaper clipping showing pictures of Auburn students rolling the trees in celebration of the death of Bear Bryant and that he did it because of that.

Problem is:
1) There was no public celebration of Bear's death in Auburn, much less a rolling of the Toomer's trees
2) The trees themselves were not really targeted until the late 80s - up until then it was electric lines, light poles, traffic light wires
3) Even if the trees had been rolled then, why wait until now to do something about it?

I think 1+2+3 = Guy was a lunatic Bamatard who got pissed that AU matched his beloved Tide's 2009 accomplishments in 2010 and then got extra pissed with the bit of ribbing Auburn fans gave the Bama folks by taping the Cam Newton jersey, etc. to the Bear statue and so he decided to go all in and take out the trees.

It should be very easy for the State to determine if Mr. Updyke, indeed purchased Spike 80DF, according to the DOW website. I have enclosed a copy of the labeling and instructions for the application of Spike 80DF. This stuff is wicked. I
It should be fairly easy to prove if Updyke is lying, as with only two places close by to get this chemical, the real question is did anyone remember him buying the chemical.
