during our annual after-season debate of wtf are we going to do about our basketball team, the subject of Rob Evans came up.

Got a guy who is hell bent on saying Evans is an amazing x's and o's guy and is the main reason for us making the Sweet 16...(even though we did that the year after he left). He thinks that Evans is solely responsible for that based on him being a great x's and o's guy but my argument is how is that possible if he wasn't the coach at all that season. If anything, he should be commended on recruiting us that team......not for his x's and o's.

...so my question is what is your opinion on Rob Evans? What was his responsibilities? Who was drawing up the plays during the game?

I think he is definitely a pretty solid recruiter.

I don't see how you can say anyone on our staff last year was a solid x's & o's guy but that may have been because Ostrum was always in Pelphrey's ear and Evans didn't have a lot of say.

Was my point exactly. I kept saying that Arky seemed to be the worst x's and o's coach team that I saw play last year.

Yeah I don't know how someone could argue that with you.

However, like I said, I'm not sure how involved Evans was with scheming in game. Everyone always says, message board speak at least, that Ostrum was the only one that Pelphrey would listen to in game and that he is horrible. Who knows if that is made up or not but it was defintiely the hot rumor the last two years.

Rob Evans was probably our best coach last year...the team respected him and is a very good recruiter with deep ties in Texas...I wish he would be retained, but doubtful

true, but I think Evans is a solid coach...over the hill maybe but He would be better than half of the SEC West coaches in 2010...

I can't say that is wrong, but if it's true, they were tied with us.

Pel wouldn't let him have any opinion. true story

Pel just hired him for a PR stunt to please the disgruntled fanbase.

Pel and Ostrum ran the show.

very interesting. What do you think would have happened if Evans was actually given actual coaching responsibilities?

I don't know really. I'd like to see Mike Anderson retain him. Evans held the team and recruits together during the entire coaching search by himself.

Ostrum and Nelson bailed like little pussies.

the 'built ___ program from scratch' is way over used on this board, but if any SEC coach in the last 50 yrs 'built a program from scratch' it was Rob Evans and Ole Miss basketball.

Lets face it to take what at best had been a 'mediocre at best' program and I know about Johnny Neumann and Weltlich's '81 team, but to take that team to back to back NCAA's and win West titles in a short time was just incredible.

If you listen to the players, they love Evans. They have a lot of respect for him. The players have said the biggest problem is that Pel wouldn't let Evans do anything. Evans was the most accomplished coach on that staff, but was basically told to keep his mouth shut.

We would have been a lot more successful IMO if Evans would have had more say so in how things were run.

Nolan Richardson once said that Rob Evans is the only coach that he ever feared.
