Using the Elephants strategy State should claim 1940 as NC.

If Alabama actually claimed "any and everything" likes it's accused of, there'd be more than 16 titles.

This topic is covered so many times. Same old stuff. The national champion will always be Alabama, no matter what happened.

Arkansas claims the same honor (FWAA) that was given to Iowa in 1958 with an 8-1-1 record. I don't think Iowa claims it either. LSU went 10-0-0 winning the AP and UPI before finishing 11-0-0 overall.

I don't know, man. Maybe if the voting authorities of the time had given some sort of keepsake or memento to the team that they chose as the champion for that year, and that team still maintained that keepsake or memento in some sort of museum or historical display for anyone to go and see, then maybe there would be some way to know. But what kind of world would that be?

1964 sure could've used Butch Jones and his Life Championship.

Meh. If the FWAA is good enough for Ohio State (a blue blood) to claim 1961 then it's good enough for Arkansas.

That's what they do, they did the same thing after coming in third in the SEC behind LSU and Georgia in 2011.

Claiming the bowls had a meaning back then would be like saying that an NFL team should be crowned champs based on the preseason.

My signature line basically lists every year someone felt they should give Alabama a trophy. So no... Alabama is pretty far from claiming them all.

I've seen rings verifying that LSU finished 2nd in something that year.

Grantland Rice trophy winners vs AP poll winners (SEC teams)

1957
Auburn won the AP (10-0)
Ohio State** won the FWAA (9-1)

1958
LSU won the AP (11-0)
Iowa won the FWAA (8-1-1)

1960
Minnesota won the AP (8-2)
Ole Miss won the FWAA (10-0-1)

1961
Alabama won the AP (11-0)
Ohio State** won the FWAA (8-0-1)

1964
Alabama won the AP (10-1)
Arkansas* won the FWAA (11-0)

Bonus
1966
Notre Dame won AP & FWAA (9-0-1)
Alabama won nothing, only unbeaten/untied team (11-0)

*Arkansas was not a SEC school in 1964.
**Yes, Ohio State claims 57 & 61 national championships, along with 1970 in which Neb. won both AP & FWAA. Ohio State won the NFF natty.

Not sure how you got 1950. Bama finished 16th.

But Bama can make excellent arguments for 1966 & 1977.

Alabama won.
Arkansas deserved to win.

Two different things.
Debate solved.

Notre Dame happened to us in 1977. Those tater-eating bastards jumped us after beating Texas. This fostered my intense like of all things Irish (except Irish Whiskey of course).
