His son was a back up QB under Petrino. Mort had a home in NWA and did a lot of his ESPN segments from there, especially when he first started battling his illness years ago.

Some of us grew up watching Mort and Jaws cover things on ESPN. It made me wonder today, who is the younger generations reporters that would be viewed in a similar light? I couldn’t really come up with anyone.

Damn, this sucks. I traded a lot of messages with Mort over the years. The dude was a sneaky big college baseball fan, and most of all, he was a massive @RazorbackBSB baseball fan. He's a legend in our industry and will be missed. Rest in peace, Mort.

Guess the Arkansas baseball team should go to his funeral so he can be let down one more time.

All jokes aside Mort was one of my favorites really sucks he passed.

There are some times even funny jokes aren’t appropriate.

Hearing Mortensen died is a reminder that no one defeats time. Just sad. Sad for his family most of all. But also sad for sports.

With all due respect you sir just don't understand. Sure might've gone overboard but acting all pious by grandstanding is just as bad.

Mort was one of the best there was

Mort was an old school journalist who did the work instead of just echoing what he read on Twitter. My condolences to his family and friends.

This a good example of why the baseball team will win it all for Mr. Mortensen.

Saban literally gushed about how Mort's son Alex was a behind the scenes engineer of the Tide's offense for several years as an analyst - I always wondered why Alex didn't go off and get an OC job, electing for so long to stay at Bama. But it made sense after hearing Saban talk about it.

Now Alex is OC at UAB and I hope he's successful.

Employees at XNA airport will tell you how much of a truly nice person Chris Mortensen was.

Terrible.

This is one of those that actually surprised me when I saw the news. It's just hard to start losing these guys when "younger you" thinks they'll somehow be around forever.

Had no idea he was already 72.

I think he was in remission for many years but the older you get, the harder it becomes for the body to fight cancer.

I admit I laughed. It was inappropriate timing. But it was funny.

I knew he'd moved into NWA when his son was a Hog but didn't know if he'd moved away once that was over. Was sad to learn of his passing.
